Body discovered on Tarka Trail

Police were contacted at around 4pm yesterday (Monday 23 February) following concerns raised by a member of the public of the welfare of a man on the Tarka Trail near Barnstaple.

Ambulance were unable to reach the man due to the location, air ambulance and police attended the scene and the man was transferred to North Devon District Hospital by helicopter where he was pronounced dead.

The death is currently being treated as not suspicious.

Police are appealing for anyone who used the Tarka Trail yesterday and may have witnessed anything to contact them via 101...

Exeter Chiefs commit to Exeter Pounds

The Exeter Chiefs have given their backing to a new local currency due to launch in the city this September. One of the largest independent businesses in Exeter, the Premiership rugby club has committed to become part of Exeter Pound. Not only will an image from Sandy Park feature on a special £E15 note issued to mark the Rugby World Cup arriving in the city, but the Chiefs have also pledged accept the Exeter Pounds and will look to spend them with their suppliers. Store manager turns Exeter shop owner and creates jobs!

After ten years of managing convenience stores for other people, well-known local retailer Ross Newham has taken the plunge and opened his own Costcutter store creating nine new jobs.

Ross purchased two former pop-up shops in South Street from Exeter City Council in October last year as part of a programme of regeneration of the city centre. The units had been vacant for the previous eighteen months. Ross has knocked them into one larger store, as part of a major redevelopment programme to create an excellent store for his customers.

Health trust appoints new director

Chiefs side to face Harlequins

Having seen his side return to winning ways in the Aviva Premiership last weekend, Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter is hoping for more of the same at Harlequins tomorrow (Saturday 3pm).

Help for Devon vulnerable to continue

More than 10,000 vulnerable people in Devon have been helped by a crisis intervention scheme over the past two years.

The scheme’s been operated by Devon County Council working with the eight district councils and funded by a Government grant.

But the scheme was in danger after the Government withdrew the grant.

However, after extensive lobbying by local councils, the Government agreed extra funding to allow it to continue.

Now Devon County Council has agreed to top up the grant to a total of £1 million to allow more people to be helped.

School children to welcome teams to RWC2015

With excitement building ahead of Rugby World Cup 2015, schools are being offered the opportunity to be part of the ceremonies which will welcome the 20 participating teams to the Tournament in England and Wales.

Each of the 20 teams will be officially welcomed to the Tournament and their respective Team Base regions by local schools in September 2015.

The Welcome Ceremonies, delivered by Tournament Organiser, England Rugby 2015, will feature a performance by the selected schools, as well as a celebration of the local community and the game.
