Donations to local group will be doubled this week as part of national match funding campaign

Topsham based charity, Estuary League of Friends, have launched their appeal to raise £10,000 in a week to provide vital services to support people in need of care, comfort and support in rural communities between Exeter and Exmouth.

The appeal is part of national match funding campaign #SmallCharityWeek . Donations made to Estuary online at BigGive.org between 23–30 June 2025 will be matched £1 for £1. So, a gift of £10 becomes £20, £50 becomes £100, and so on!

All the funds raised will be used to deliver vital services for the community such as:

New McDonald's opens in Exeter

A brand-new McDonald’s restaurant in Exeter opened on Wednesday 4th June.

Following significant investment from local Franchisee David Shawyer, the restaurant is open for dine-in, takeaway, Drive Thru, Click & Serve and McDelivery. Opening hours will be 6am – 11pm, seven days a week.

The new 104-seater restaurant has created around 132 new full and part-time jobs for the local community and features table service, self-ordering kiosks, a large outside patio area and a Drive Thru with Smart Digital Drive Thru menu boards.

University of Exeter continues green transition

Thousands of solar panels are being installed as the University of Exeter continues its shift to renewable energy.

Once completed, the new panels – including 1,800 on land near Duryard Halls of Residence – should increase total solar generation on the University’s Exeter campuses to 4.1 megawatt-hours (MWh) per year.

This electricity – equivalent to the power used by 1,500 households – would provide about 15% of the University’s annual requirements, saving 840 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

'Thinking Drinkers' Tom Sandham and Ben McFarland are visiting Exeter’s pubs on a gruelling 1,000-mile plus, two-week journey on a tandem bike to toast the great British pub and highlight the industry’s crisis.

Iron Bridge in Exeter re-opened

The Grade II Listed Iron Bridge in Exeter has re-opened on schedule today (Monday 16 June) following major refurbishment.

Extensive work has been carried out in order to prevent water damage to the structure, which was built in 1834.

Over the past five months, the old road surface has been removed and a new waterproof layer has been added. Drainage has been improved, and signs and lighting have been upgraded.
