Leading South West building services engineering company EX2 Group has welcomed three new apprentices this week, as they begin their professional training in Electrical Installation with Exeter College.

Christian, Alfie, and Harvey were welcomed to the Exeter offices by James Rayner (right), Project Manager. The apprentices will combine on-site experience with classroom learning as they work towards their Level 3 Electrical Installation qualifications. ‘Shop and drop’ to recycle and raise funds for charity

Visitors to Exeter city centre can now recycle plastic bottle tops and tubs at a brand-new drop-off point in Princesshay Shopping Centre and help contribute to a more circular economy.

Leading south west recycling and waste management firm, DCW, has partnered with the popular shopping destination to run its Recycle & Raise scheme all year round. The plastic recycling scheme which asks the public to donate plastic tubs and bottle tops to raise funds for Dartmoor Zoo and mental health charity Mind, was previously operated by DCW only over the festive period.

Storm Eunice: High winds expected early Friday morning

Devon County Council is advising people to take extra care when travelling this Friday morning (February 18) with Storm Eunice expected to hit the region in the early hours.

The south west is expected to be battered by gale force winds from midnight to mid-morning on Friday and the Met Office has issued a Yellow Wind Warning.

Winds in coastal areas are expected to be the strongest with gusts of 60-70 mph possible over a reasonably large area.

Gusts could reach as high as 80 mph, even inland, and Devon County Council is warning that this could cause travel...

New cairn for charity thanks to kind hearted builders

The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust at Parke near Bovey Tracy has a brand new car park donation cairn, thanks to the huge generosity of local builders, suppliers and the continuing loyal support of the charity’s many friends.

Earlier this year, the cairn was destroyed and the car park donations, which are used to purchase hay for the charity’s ponies, stolen.

Taylor Wimpey helps Cranbrook school ‘grow’ its eco footprint

​Taylor Wimpey Exeter recently helped pupils at St Martin’s Primary School in Cranbrook plant 10 new trees to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The donation from Taylor Wimpey was to support the school’s involvement in The Queen’s Green Canopy campaign, a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee this year which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

New research reveals benefits of ‘eco-action’ as charity launches this year’s Great British Spring Clean

84% of children and young people aged six to 17 in the South West believe they are capable of making a positive difference to the future of the planet, but almost three in five (59%) of those say they need others to help them.

Generous shoppers in Devon are being encouraged to support a fundraising campaign for three leading health charities.

Last year Tesco's ‘Helping you to live healthier’ campaign raised more than £1million after customers rounded up their shop to the nearest £1 at self-service tills.

Over £11 million awarded to South West for support for domestic abuse victims to rebuild their lives

Domestic abuse victims in the South West and their children will receive extra support to help them rebuild their lives in a safe environment, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities announced today (15 February).   

Over £11 million will be given to councils in the South West as part of £125 million government funding across England to make sure safe accommodation spaces, such as refuges and shelters, can provide victims with vital support services including healthcare, social workers and benefits.

The Tour of Britain will not return to Devon this year, but the county council hopes it will host stages again in the future.

Last week the locations for this year’s tour were announced, with Devon missing out on hosting in 2022, despite the success of last September’s event.

Disabled parking U-turn

Devon County Council has U-turned on a plan to charge for new disabled parking bays from April.

As part of the Conservative-run council’s new budget, it proposed a new fee of £200 for the cost of putting in new disabled bays outside homes, saving an estimated £100,000 a year.

That’s come in for considerable criticism, not least from the opposition Liberal Democrats who describe the idea as a “disability tax” which will hit the most vulnerable.
