A group of South West-based researchers have shown that early improvements in asthma symptoms can help predict how effective treatment will be in the future.

Experts at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, the University of Plymouth, and the University of Exeter used national data to find out if it’s possible to predict how people with severe asthma will respond to medication.

New research leads to Trust action to spot cancer warning signs in standard blood tests

Scientists at the University of Exeter have found a new way of interpreting standard blood tests to help GPs spot cancer warning signs – and the test is now being integrated in an NHS trust.

The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (RDUH) is the first Trust to apply a new algorithm to routine blood analysis. It will mean they can detect differences in raised blood platelet levels in a more tailored way, and flag any concerns to GPs to investigate.

The world’s largest garden wildlife survey returns this month, with hundreds of thousands of people watching and counting the UK’s garden birds over the last weekend in January for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

Over 600 thousand people took part in 2024, counting more than nine million birds. In Devon more than 16 thousand people took part, with the House Sparrow taking the top spot as the most commonly seen bird, followed by Blue Tit, and Blackbird.

Clare inspires fundraising head shave challenge

Family, friends and colleagues of an Exeter woman with a rare form of cancer have raised more than £5,000 for charity by having their heads shaved.

Mum-of-three Clare Simpson was on holiday in Egypt with her mum and daughter when she found a lump.

The 41-year-old was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in September and in now on eight months of chemotherapy before surgery.
