Proposed health cuts concern charity

As new figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show the number of drug-related deaths in England and Wales has increased for the second year in a row, drug and alcohol treatment charity Addaction has called for the government to rethink proposed cuts to local authority health spending.

“These tragic figures paint a stark picture of the shifting landscape of drug misuse in England and Wales,” said Simon Antrobus, Chief Executive of Addaction, which works in partnership with EDP to delivery drug and alcohol services across Devon as RISE Recovery.

Don't be a victim of telephone fraud

Police are reminding the public to be vigilant about telephone scams and to follow some simple advice to prevent them from becoming a victim of this type of crime.

Devon and Cornwall Police have been working with partners and the community to raise the awareness of the sudden rise in elderly victims who are conned out of thousands of pounds by tricksters who convince them they are calling on behalf of the police or the bank. Exeter project wins lottery funding

Exeter Historic Buildings Trust (EHBT) has received a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, ‘Monks in the Refectory’.

Led by EHBT, the project has been given £7,500 towards creating a set of five new interpretation panels, which will help visitors to 21 The Mint (the former refectory wing of 11th century St Nicholas Priory) to understand daily life in the Priory.

EHBT’s mission statement is to preserve for the benefit of the people of Exeter, buildings in and around Exeter of particular historic or architectural merit.

Drinkers subsidise teetotallers with tax

The direct costs of alcohol use to the government in England – including NHS, police, criminal justice and welfare costs – amount to just under £4 billion each year, whilst revenues from alcohol taxes amount to over £10 billion.

Using the most recent health, crime and drinking data, a report by the Institute of Economic Affairs claims that contrary to popular belief, drinkers are not a burden on the taxpayer.
