Entries now open for the RSPCA’s Walk on the Wild Side challenge

Wildlife lovers are being invited to sign up for the RSPCA’s autumn active fundraising event ‘ Walk on the Wild Side ’.

The event invites participants across England and Wales to complete a walking challenge throughout October.

The fundraising challenge comes at a critical time for the charity as it reveals that last October (2024) was its busiest month for hedgehogs in the last five years*, and also marks the beginning of ‘seal pup season’ - when the RSPCA’s wildlife hospitals also typically see a spike in grey seals admitted as orphans, or struggling to feed and are...

Warning following thefts in East Devon

Residents in East Devon are being warned to be vigilant after a series of thefts have been reported to police over the last few weeks.

Thieves have entered barns, garages and sheds in rural areas, surrounding Ottery St Mary, by removing the hinges or the padlocks and stolen items from inside including power tools, animal feed, animal bedding, fencing, petrol and small items.

During one burglary, a red compressor was taken from a shed at a property in Higher Spring Gardens, Ottery St Mary, on Tuesday 22 September. (CR/066429/15)

Students offered a leg up in horseracing industry

Students with a love of horse racing are being given the opportunity to apply to become Exeter Racecourse’s official ambassador and partake in a series of work experience days aimed at giving them a leg up in the industry.

The role, which lasts from November 1 until the end of May, includes placements with various work providers in the industry to provide an insight into the many and varied roles available in the racing industry.

People are being urged not to overfill their rubbish bins and avoid putting out extra bin bags full of waste.

Overfilled bins are prone to litter spillage and can cause injury to the refuse crews when top-heavy bins are tipped into the truck.

Walkers raise £2,000 for Exeter Foundation

The Exeter Foundation’s annual Big Walk has raised over £2,000 for the charity.

On September 20th, nearly 100 participants walked 10 miles from Sandy Park, through Exeter’s Riverside Valley Park and back to the Rugby World Cup venue.

Building on the success of previous events, walkers enjoyed a Sandy Park pasty and drink on their return and the New Zealand v Argentina World Cup game was screened.

£130k funding boost for Get Active Exeter

An initiative to get more adults in Exeter active has today (1 October) received a massive financial boost.

Get Active Exeter, whose ambition is to make Exeter the most active city in the South West by 2018, has been given a £130,000 grant from Sport England.

Get Active Exeter is a multi-sports partnership led by Exeter City Council, Exeter Health and Wellbeing Board and Active Devon, set up to get more adults in Exeter involved in physical activity.

The University of Exeter has broken into the top 100 universities in the world for the first time in the most influential global league table.

The University is now ranked 93rd in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, placing it among the very best institutions across the globe.

New legislation has come into force today (1st October) which makes it an offence to smoke in a vehicle containing a person under the age of 18.

The Smoke-Free (Private Vehicles) Regulations 2015 has been introduced to protect children from the harms of second-hand smoke.

It is now an offence to smoke in a private vehicle with someone under the age of 18 present, and if you are the driver, to fail to prevent smoking in your vehicle with someone under-18 present.

Three mountains hiked, 49,000 steps walked and 2865 metres climbed to raise money for St Loye’s Foundation.

On the 12th of September NatWest Devon Commercial Banking tackled the Welsh Three Peaks challenge to raise funds for their charity of the year, St Loye’s Foundation.

Superfast broadband arrives in Tipton

Superfast fibre broadband has arrived in the East Devon village of Tipton St John.

It’s part of a rollout programme by Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS).

More than 315 households and businesses can now benefit from fibre broadband after the installation of the first street fibre broadband cabinet serving the centre of the village.
