To Vote or not to Vote?

After observing the unedifying General Election campaign nationally and being involved in several local Hustings, I have to honestly say I am feeling very uninspired and pretty low about the overall state of English politics. In my view, we face an unprecedented global ecological challenge and a menacing destabilisation of democracy. Together these two call for an intense campaign to de-carbonise as soon as possible on the one hand, and a profound and radical overhaul of our political and economic systems and structures on the other. This means we need to set out detailed programmes to...

A group of MPs from Canada, India, Pakistan and the Republic of Seychelles is to observe the UK’s general election in Exeter, spending 4 to 8 May in the constituency.

They will observe Election Day procedures – from the opening of polling stations throughout the voting, to their closing, and the counting of ballots – and will meet with candidates from all the major parties, returning officer, local officials, community groups and other relevant stakeholders in order to observe the conduct of the election in Exeter and the environment in which it will take place.

The team in...

Don’t miss out on your chance to vote

People not yet on the electoral register still have time to make sure they can vote in this May's elections.

A General Election will take place on Thursday 7 May to elect the Member of Parliament for the Exeter Constituency as well as elections for 13 seats on Exeter City Council.

Jeff Chalk, Electoral Services Manager said: “People must be on the electoral register to have their say on who sits on the City Council and who represents them in government. For those who have recently moved to the area, or moved house within the city, it is important to make sure that they...

In their newly published letter ‘Who is my Neighbour?’ the Bishops of the Church of England call on us to draw on our deeper consciences as we approach the General Election in May.

In particular they rightly call us to reassess the policies the political parties are offering us in terms of values.

How will this policy impact on the weakest in society? How will this affect future generations? Will this action bring about justice, peace and reconciliation? What makes for the common good? What kind of society do we expect to live in? It seems to me that at this time there are...

Exeter residents urged to register to vote

People are being encouraged to ensure they don’t miss their chance to vote in this year’s elections.

Exeter City Council is urging any local residents not yet registered to vote, to go online now and register. National Voter Registration Day, which encourages people to get involved in the democratic process by ensuring they are registered to vote, is being held on 5 February, although voter registration can take place at any time.

There are less than 100 days until voters go to the polls to elect a Member of Parliament for the Exeter and East Devon constituencies. Local...

Make sure you are eligible to vote

People living in Exeter are being urged to complete their electoral registration forms so that they can vote in next year’s elections. Over 52,000 forms went out to all homes in the city at the beginning of October and need to be returned to the City Council as soon as possible. This is the first step in compiling and updating the 2014 Register of Electors for Exeter. People who fail to complete and return the form won’t be included on the Register and will lose their right to vote. Jeff Chalk, Democratic Services Manager, said: ''The Council is obliged by law to contact each household to...

Green Action August Comment: Whose Democracy?

In a democratic society any government should be judged by both how it has deepened and enhanced democracy, and by the quality of life it leaves for future generations. On these two criteria our recent politicians do not have much to be proud of. In my view, they have been short-sighted, especially (though not exclusively) by the way they have failed to recognise and act urgently to address climate change, and by the way our (albeit immature) democratic processes have been eroded.

More and more powers have been removed from the English regions and from local authorities, at a time...
