Dementia researchers raise thousands for charity in epic bike challenge

Five dementia researchers at the University of Exeter have pedalled over an epic 350 miles from London to Paris, raising thousands of pounds for Alzheimer’s Society in a gruelling four day challenge.

The team has raised more than £11,000 towards their £12,000 target to boost the Society’s ground-breaking dementia research, and they still hope to achieve their goal. To donate, visit their Justgiving page.

An Exeter researcher has just been awarded £362,337 from leading charity Diabetes UK to understand if certain genes can protect people from developing Type 2 diabetes. Dr Hanieh Yaghootkar who works at the University of Exeter Medical School has been awarded Diabetes UK’s R D Lawrence Fellowship, set up in recognition of the life and work of the late Dr R D Lawrence, co-founder of Diabetes UK. Exeter College is celebrating a record breaking year by celebrating welcoming their 1,000th apprentice.

The 1,000th Apprentice is Jordanna Broom who is a higher engineering apprentice at the University of Exeter. Jordanna enjoyed her initial engineering training and has decided to pursue her career through one of the college’s higher level apprenticeships.

Exeter Chiefs Director of Rugby honoured by the University of Exeter

Exeter Chiefs Director of Rugby Rob Baxter has celebrated another high profile achievement – being awarded an honorary degree by the University of Exeter.

Mr Baxter, who helped lead the rugby team to Premiership victory this year, received his doctorate just a day after his son Jack graduated from the University of Exeter with a first-class degree in Law.

Mr Baxter previously played with the team for 14 years, serving 10 of them as the club’s captain. During his playing career he amassed over 300 appearances at the club’s old County Ground home.

The more regularly people report doing word puzzles such as crosswords, the better their brain function in later life, a large-scale and robust online trial has found.

Experts at the University of Exeter Medical School and Kings College London analysed data from more than 17,000 healthy people aged 50 and over, submitted in an online trial. Exeter Chiefs Head Coach Rob Baxter will be awarded an honorary degree from the University of Exeter after the rugby team’s stunning performance this season led them to become national champions.
