These dramatic images tweeted by Exeter's Prospect Inn show the River Exe close to bursting its banks.

Businesses and residents in the area were put on flood alert last night as torrential rain fell on already swollen waterways and saturated ground.

The pub used Twitter to keep people up to date with events during last night and into this morning.

Shortly after midnight, a message read "Have just had a call from Floodline to say flooding on Exeter Quay is imminent!!!"

And at 5.30am they tweeted "It is still rising...it has now reached the cobbled road, so...

One teenager made offensive comments about a murdered child on Twitter. Another young man wrote on Facebook that British soldiers should "go to hell." A third posted a picture of a burning paper poppy, symbol of remembrance of war dead.

All were arrested, two convicted, and one jailed — and they're not the only ones. In Britain, hundreds of people are prosecuted each year for posts, tweets, texts and emails deemed menacing, indecent, offensive or obscene, and the number is growing as our online lives expand.

Lawyers say the mounting tally shows the problems of a legal...

#FreeTheTopsham1 – Why you need a social media policy

A recent Twitter campaign, #FreeTheTopsham1, started by an Exeter councillor highlights the need for all businesses to have a social media policy in place for employees.

#FreeTheTopsham1 – The Story

A Topsham based PCSO, tweeting as @TopshamPolice, was recently asked by her employer, Devon & Cornwall Police, to stop tweeting and undertake some training following complaints by the University of Exeter Students’ Guild about some of her tweets. The Guild argued that the tone and content of her tweets (e.g. “Off to work in an hour – more student mayhem”) was reinforcing the...

Sudanese citizen journalist and activist Usamah Mohamad was released after two months in prison.

Mohamad, who was arrested in Khartoum, thanked on Twitter his supporters and those who had campaigned for his release.

Far from being discouraged by the goverment's attempt to silence him, the citizen journalist seemed all the more determined as he tweeted upon his release on Friday "struggle continues".

The young activist was detained on June 22 by National Intelligence Security Service (NISS) officers as he was covering the wave of protests that was sweeping through...

#Free the Topsham 1 Twitter Campaign

A Twitter campaign has begun - with the tongue-in-cheek hashtag of #FreetheTopsham1 - after the popular local PCSO Sarah Giles, who tweets as @TopshamPolice, was ordered to stop tweeting.

PCSO Giles, who has more than 1,000 followers, was told to close her account after her tweets about covering freshers weekend drew criticism from some quarters. Gareth Oughton, from the university’s Student Guild, said the police were contacted about “the reinforcement of negative stereotypes”.

Despite that belief, sparked by her fact-based comments on student mayhem and alcohol...
