Genetic mutations can cause obesity, say Cambridge University researchers

Researchers from the University of Cambridge have discovered a novel genetic cause of severe obesity which, although relatively rare, demonstrates for the first time that genes can reduce basal metabolic rate - how the body burns calories.

Previous studies (performed by David Powell and colleagues at Lexicon Pharmaceuticals in Texas) demonstrated that when the gene KSR2 (Kinase Suppressor of Ras 2) was deleted in mice, the animals became severely obese. Explosion at fertiliser plant in Texas

At least three people were reportedly killed, dozens of others were injured and about six firefighters were missing after a massive blast and huge fireball tore through a Fertiliser facility in West Texas, about 20 miles north of Waco.

A huge plume of smoke - laden with toxic anhydrous ammonia - was visible for miles and was being pushed by winds blowing from the south, officials said.

Perfectly mixed up – Devon’s young care leavers to stage a play in Texas

Drama has become a regular activity for Exeter’s young people in care who have joined forces with students from the University of Exeter to stage a play in Austin, Texas. Stetsons and cowboy boots are at the ready as Exeter’s creative gang of performers head to the United States. This life-changing experience will be the first time that the theatre company ‘Perfectly Mixed Up’ travel and perform outside of Devon. Throughout the week-long stay the company will perform their show, More than the Sum and run two workshops with young people in care in Austin, Texas.
