Derby Day defeat hurts Steenson

Gareth Steenson insists he and his Exeter Chiefs team-mates will pick themselves up despite suffering yet more late heartache during Sunday’s Aviva Premiership clash with rivals Bath.

Semesa Rokoduguni’s converted try – seven minutes into added on time – saw the Chiefs undone right at the death, eventually going down 13-10 in front of a capacity crowd at Sandy Park.

Not for the first time this season, Rob Baxter’s side were again left to wallow in yet another narrow reverse that has left them seventh in the current Premiership standings.

However, skipper Steenson...

Chiefs name side to face Gloucester

Having chopped and changed personnel for the first two fixtures in this year’s Westcountry Challenge Cup, Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter is promising a more settled approach for the final two games of the competition.

With Gloucester next on the agenda tomorrow at Bristol’s Memorial Ground (3pm), followed by Bath a week later at the Rec, Baxter hopes to use these subsequent away days as the ideal opportunity to ready his troops for the battles ahead.

Buoyed by home wins over both teams already in the new-look, three-team competition, Baxter is well aware the next two...

Steenson targeting a big finale

Gareth Steenson insists Exeter Chiefs can ill afford to be afraid of the rewards that are on offer with the Aviva Premiership heading towards a dramatic conclusion over the coming weeks.

With just two rounds of the scheduled season remaining, the Devon club are still firmly in the race for the end-of-season play-offs, this despite slipping to a 36-29 defeat against Wasps on Sunday.

That loss, coupled with Leicester's bonus point win over bottom club London Welsh 24 hours earlier, saw Rob Baxter's side slip a place to fifth in the current standings.

However, a last-...

Exeter Chiefs fly-half Gareth Steenson insists he and his team-mates still have plenty to work on despite their solid start to the new Aviva Premiership season.

Rob Baxter's side collected their second win in three starts this term on Friday night as Steenson led the way in a 25-22 victory over Gloucester at Kingsholm.

The Irish playmaker provided 14 points with the boot as Devon's finest won away to the Cherry & Whites for the third time in four seasons.

The hard-fought win momentarily lifted the Chiefs to the summit of the Premiership for the second time this...

Chiefs charge their batteries in preparation for upcoming battle with the Tigers

The Exeter Chiefs squad maybe taking a few well-earned days off following back-to-back wins over London Welsh and Harlequins, but Gareth Steenson insists it will be back to business again next week.

The Irishman produced a stellar showing in Saturday's 27-16 away win at reigning Aviva Premiership champions Harlequins, landing 17 points with the boot, as well as playing his part in Exeter's two tries scored by Damian Welch and Luke Arscott.

It was a victory that not only saw the Devon club claim a league double over the Londoners, but put the Chiefs firmly back in the mix...

English Touring Opera presents Simon Boccanegra by Verdi

Event Date:
21/03/2013 - 7:30pm to 23/03/2013 - 7:30pm
Venue:
Northcott Theatre, Exeter

ETO’s first new Verdi production for several years is Simon Boccanegra – a mature masterpiece, and an intimate drama uniquely suited to venues like Exeter Northcott Theatre.

The story comes from the history of Genoa, for centuries a great maritime republic, and from it Verdi creates an impassioned plea for Italian unity. The title character is a former pirate who returns to the city to become its leader.

The composer’s musical depiction of the shimmering Mediterranean is wonderful. So too are the characters he creates, from the rough-hewn buccaneer-turned-ruler (the title...
