Students and staff at St James School in Exeter, part of the Ted Wragg Trust family, are celebrating after being rated Good by Ofsted.

The Ofsted report notes that the school motto of ‘work hard, be kind’ is lived by the pupils and staff at St James School and that it is an inclusive school built on warm, respectful relationships. That the school has high expectations for behaviour was also singled out, along with the fact that the calm school environment enables students to focus on their studies.

Look out for the Exeter Sheep Trail

The Exeter Sheep Trail is being launched next week (Fri 25th Nov) when a variety of knitted sheep will be displayed in local shop windows.

The trail is a community project being run by Isca Church and over the past few weeks’ enthusiastic local knitters have been busily creating a fabulous flock of more than 30 woolly sheep.

The sheep are all different shapes and sizes and have their own name, proudly displayed on a brown tag.

Local shops and businesses in Beacon Heath, Pinhoe and Whipton will put the sheep in their display windows – children from local schools,...

Exeter school alumni inspire current generation

An Exeter state school has joined a nationwide campaign to inspire students to career confidence and academic success.

St James School in Summer Lane is one of nearly 400 state schools and colleges across Britain registered with the national education charity Future First to set up ‘old school tie networks’ enabling them to harness the talents of ex-students to support current students.

Former students returned to the school as part of Back to School Weekwhich called on more state students to sign up to support the current generation at their old school.

Isca Church held a big birthday party for Jesus!

Children came dressed in nativity costumes, the hall at St James School, Exeter, was decorated with banners and balloons and band members wore Santa hats.

Children joined in the nativity story, sang songs, played a game of pass the parcel, decorated crowns and after the service were given party bags which contained very loud party blowers which of course they loved!

Then it was time to cut the amazing birthday cake made by Heather Knee and tuck into party food brought by the congregation.

Mentee awards for city duo

A current and former student at an Exeter state school have won prestigious awards in a national online mentoring scheme to boost academic success and career confidence.

Kaydie Hicks, a student at St James School, and alumna Alli German, who works in public administration for Devon County Council, won the Third Sector Mentee of the Year award, sponsored by Total Professions, and Industry Mentor of the Year award, sponsored by Harper Adams University, respectively at the Brightside Online Mentoring Awards.

Headteacher's tribute to student

The headteacher of the Exeter school in mourning over the death of pupil Leo Gregory today paid a glowing tribute to him.

Moira Marder said everyone at St James, in Summer Lane, was devastated at the loss of a wonderful young man from a wonderful family.

She told The Exeter Daily: "St James School is devastated to hear of the loss of Leo Gregory. He was a wonderful young man who was right at the heart of St James community.

"Staff have commented on how he radiated happiness and warmth. A hugely talented student, he played a lead role, John, in our summer production...

Right now, there are students in the assembly hall where you once sat, facing similar challenges and opportunities that you did. Being connected to you could really help them.
