Remembering every man who fell on the first day of the Battle of the Somme

More than 394 soldiers from The Devonshire Regiment will be individually remembered in a unique and historic centenary art project commemorating the fallen of the Battle of the Somme.

The 19240 Shrouds of the Somme commemorates all 19,240 allied soldiers who fell on the first day of the battle which began on July 1st 1916.

Exactly 100 years to the day later, at the same time as the whistle was blown to ‘go over the top’, 19,240 hand-stitched shrouded figures representing every soldier have been revealed, laid out in Exeter’s Northernhay Gardens.

Joss Stone & Jeff Beck record poppy song

Devon Grammy and Brit Award singer Joss Stone has teamed up with guitar legend Jeff Beck to record this year’s official Poppy Appeal single.

The single is a soulful cover of 'No Man’s Land (Green Fields of France)', written in 1976 by Scottish-born folk singer-songwriter Eric Bogle. Reflecting on the grave of a young man (Willie McBride) who died during the First World War, its chorus refers to two famous pieces of military music, 'The Last Post' and 'The Flowers of the Forest'.

Although the song speaks of the destiny of one soldier in particular, the song was chosen by...

OFT launches market study into providers of quick, discounted house sales

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is today (18 April) launching a study into the 'quick house sale' market and is calling for people who have used, or considered using, these businesses to contact the OFT about their experiences.

Quick house sale providers offer to buy a house or find a third party buyer very quickly, usually at a discount from the full market value. While providers may offer a valuable service, the OFT is concerned that some practices might lead to homeowners receiving much less for their property than it is worth. Any losses could be very high.

The OFT is...

Celebrate Our Soldiers - A night of Classical & Choir Music at Exeter Cathedral.

During 2012, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity disbursed over £106,000 to Devon based soldiers injured in battle and the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

While fatalities in Afghanistan dominate the headlines, seldom are the stories told of those young men and women who have suffered serious injuries in the battle field and whose lives will be affected forever.

This is why the Devon branch of ABF The Soldiers Charity is organising one of the most unique concerts Exeter...
