Exeter pupil awarded research placement

An Exeter School scientist spent one month on a Nuffield research placement at Exeter University gaining an insight into scientific research.

Upper Sixth Former Robbie Bell spent four weeks in Exeter University's Biophysics department; running a research project alongside a lab partner, working nine to five, five days a week.

Historical data hold secrets of one of UK’s favourite fish

UK fisheries survey logbooks from the 1930s to 1950s have been digitised for the first time, revealing how cod responded to changing temperatures in the last century.

Scientists at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) and the University of Exeter found that at the time, the warm seas experienced around Norway benefitted the cod, similar to the conditions there today.

Biologist takes science to Parliament

Karla-Luise Herpoldt, 26, from Newton St Cyres, near Exeter, is attending Parliament to present her science to a range of politicians and a panel of expert judges, as part of SET for Britain on Monday 9 March.

Karla-Luise’s poster on her research into new ways of detecting HIV will be judged against dozens of other biologists’ research in the only national competition of its kind.

Karla-Luise, a final year PhD student at Imperial College London, was shortlisted from hundreds of applicants to appear in Parliament.

Exeter University receives £2m towards future of science

The University of Exeter has received a £2 million gift from The Wolfson Foundation to support the establishment of a new Living Systems Institute, which will pioneer a new approach to treating the world’s most serious diseases.

The gift is the largest award made by The Wolfson Foundation in 2014 and constitutes the latest milestone in a long history of key contributions from the charity towards the advancement of science at Exeter.

Popular science communicator Dr Simon Singh, MBE visited Exeter School on Monday 10 November to give a talk for 700 school children from across Exeter and beyond.

They were fascinated to hear how physics is involved in everything from the Big Bang to The Simpsons. Dr Singh told them how developments in physics have allowed us to understand our universe, as well as develop new technologies which we all rely on, such as smartphones.

The Institute of Directors has expanded its South West team with the appointment of Hannah Goodenough as head of Business Development for the region.
