2022 marks 50 years since two leading documentary photographers started out on their careers in Devon.
Half a century ago James Ravilious was appointed by the Beaford Arts Centre to be its resident photographer in North Devon. James dedicated himself, until his untimely death in 1999, to photographing the rural communities around his home leaving behind a stunning record of rural life and landscape in the Beaford Archive.
Chief Ouray Crowfoot and a delegation from the Siksika Nation in Canada will take possession of sacred regalia in a handover event in Exeter on 19 May 2022.
The regalia and other belongings which has been housed in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery in Exeter since 1878, include a buckskin shirt, pair of leggings, a knife with feather bundle, two beaded bags and a horsewhip. These objects once belonged to Chief Crowfoot, an important late nineteenth-century Blackfoot leader.

Exeter City Council’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) has announced a major new exhibition exploring the museum and Devon’s links with the Transatlantic Slave Trade in early 2022.
In Plain Sight: Transatlantic slavery and Devon will investigate aspects of Devon and Exeter’s relationship with the Transatlantic Slave Trade that are all around us, but for some remain ‘hidden in plain sight’. Exeter City Council has secured a landmark ruling over the rateable valuation of the city’s Grade II listed Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM).
The decision will have a significant impact on the way many English and Welsh museums are valued in the future, especially those in similar listed buildings with high operating costs.
The case was brought by the Valuation Office as an appeal against a decision made by the Valuation Tribunal for England in August 2018, which set the rateable value of RAMM at £1 from April 2015.

Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum has won Gold in the 2017 Devon Tourism Awards for Large Attraction. RAMM also scooped a Silver award for Access and Inclusivity and Bronze award for Artistic, Cultural and Learning Attraction.

The Exeter Dementia Action Alliance will be officially launching next month at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum with over 100 due to attende from local councillors to city retailers, businesses, people living with dementia and their care givers.
