Greece facing general strike today in mass protest against austerity

Greece is braced once again for mass protest as a nationwide general strike is planned for Thursday (18 Oct).

The strike has already begun in some areas of Greece, and for some professions. On Wednesday journalists staged a walk-out, as well as lawyers, notaries, pharmacists and doctors. Civil servants, and thousands of others from across all sectors are due to join them on Thursday.

Greek protesters want to send a message to the European Union that societies facing successive austerity waves to meet fiscal goals have reached their limit.

In this year of the London Olympics and Paralympics, Games People Play e xplores what games can tell us about human nature.

This second part focuses on contemporary photography and video by 16 important international artists who use sporting imagery to make wider comments on the human condition. Exeter Contemporary Open 2012 Winner Announced

At an exclusive awards ceremony and exhibition opening at Exeter Phoenix last night, Olivier Larivière was announced as the recipient of the main £1000 award for the Exeter Contemporary Open 2012. The judges – artist S Mark Gubb, independent curator Paula Orrell and Phoenix gallery curator Matt Burrows faced a tough decision to select three award winners from the nine exhibiting artists. Olivier's paintings however, a series of images depicting people handling wild animals, were seen to stand out as particularly strong.
