Hospiscare’s Open Gardens shows off Devon’s hidden treasures

This year will once again see Hospiscare teaming up with local residents who are gladly opening their gardens in support of what is now a favourite staple in the charity’s calendar. This year, Hospiscare Open Gardens is entering its fifteenth year and to date has raised the awe inspiring amount of £227,000. This is thanks to the gardeners who work tirelessly caring for their outdoor spaces, the visitors who turn out in force to marvel at these treasured lands and the friends, family and volunteers who come together to make it all possible.

From local sparkling wine to nursery plants, crafts and gifts to locally-produced delicious food, floral workshops and expert panels, together with a newly revamped Children’s Area, the Garden and Food Festival run by the Colyton Grammar School PA is a great day out for all the family.

The Festival returns to Colyton Grammar School on Saturday 11th May between 10.00am and 4.00pm and there is no charge for attendance.

Stroke patients benefit from new garden at the RD&E

Patients on the Acute Stroke Unit at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust are now able to relax in a new, upgraded garden.

Work began on the garden in Autumn 2018 on the Acute Stroke Unit, otherwise known as Clyst Ward, to convert the area from a space that was not easily accessible or beneficial to the recovery of patients, into an area which improves overall wellbeing and that patients can enjoy. The garden is now easily accessible from the ward with a wide range of brightly coloured plants in raised flower beds for patients, staff and visitors to enjoy.

RSPB celebrates 40 years of counting garden birds in Exeter

The RSPB is celebrating a very special anniversary of its world famous Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend (26-28 January).

Just one hour every year, for the last 40 years, has made the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch the largest garden wildlife citizen science project. During that time, hundreds of thousands of people have volunteered their time providing the RSPB with over 8 million hours of monitoring garden birds.

Over the last four decades, an astonishing 130 million birds have been counted giving the RSPB real insight into how our birds are faring.

Teignbridge green fingers help Buckfastleigh community garden blossom

A Buckfastleigh community garden will blossom in spring thanks to a conservation event led by Teignbridge District Council’s Green Spaces team and with help from pupils from Buckfastleigh Primary School.

Daffodil bulbs have been planted at Buckfastleigh’s Duckspond Recreation Ground and come Spring will be ready to flower alongside 500 Crocus Corns which have been donated by members from the Rotary Club of Ashburton/Buckfastleigh. Summer is beckoning and so are those jobs in your garden - so why not sign up to East Devon’s fortnightly green waste collection service and save yourself the journey to your local recycling centre.

More than 6,000 district council households have already subscribed to the new kerbside collections which will make life so much easier for our green fingered residents to dispose of their green waste.

Eleven independent plant nurseries selling a wide selection of plants grown in the south west. From old roses and primroses to grasses and shade lovers, there's a plant suitable for any garden situation and the nurseryman willing to provide growing instructions.

The 13 acre gardens developed over the last 40 years by Mary Benger are open until 6pm and refreshments, light lunches and cakes are available in the cafe.

Toby Buckland’s garden tribute

Gardener, writer and broadcaster Toby Buckland has replanted the flower beds leading up to the Garden entrance to Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery as a tribute to its collections.

Devon is a county of plant hunters with famous historical nurseries like Veitch and Pinces. This rich history has long been reflected in the displays and exhibits at RAMM. It is now also mirrored in the at RAMM’s Garden entrance.
