Honiton’s Helen shortlisted for Devon Sports Coach of the Year

Honiton Gymnastics Club high-performance coach Helen Reddy has been shortlisted for the Coach of the Year Award in the Devon Sports Awards 2017.

The Level 5 gymnastics coach, who has been involved in the sport for more than 30 years, will now attend a glittering awards ceremony at Sandy Park in June.

Helen has been recognised by awards’ judges thanks to her tireless work at both Honiton Gymnastics club (where she is a coach and board member) and at Ivybridge Community College (where she is Head of Performing Arts and runs the gymnastics academy).

Petrol heads can get their fill of vintage vehicles this spring at Killerton, when over 400 classic car enthusiasts take a pit stop in the historic parkland to showcase their polished pride and joys. The roaring event takes place on Sunday 14 May at the Killerton Estate, just outside of Exeter. To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, East Devon District Council's Countryside team has put together a walk to lift the mood and encourage people to spend time outdoors and explore the beautiful countryside.

The team helps to maintain the South West Coast Path for walkers to enjoy, in partnership with a number of other organisations and land owners, and countryside ranger, Dave Palmer has developed the three and a half mile walk from Beer Head car park to Branscombe. The walk takes in the spectacular views and stunning scenery along the Jurassic coast.

Ben Moon says he and his Exeter Chiefs team-mates are just “one hard shift” away from returning to Twickenham and a place in the Aviva Premiership Final for the second year running.

The enormous food and drink pavilion at the Devon County Show held on May 18-20 at Westpoint, Exeter is the largest yet.

Measuring a colossal 105 metres by 25 metres, it is 10 metres longer than last year and will house even more artisan producers, a seating area and a cookery demonstration theatre.

Rainbow flags flying with Pride at University of Exeter

Rainbow flags are flying at the University of Exeter’s campuses this week as staff and students mark Exeter Pride.

The University is a key sponsor of the event, which celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) communities and is honouring the occasion through proudly flying the emblem and hosting a Pride on Campus event to raise awareness of the staff and student LGBTQ+ networks.

Chemical spill on Marsh Barton Industrial Estate

Fire crews were called to a chemical spill at Marsh Barton Industrial Estate this morning (Thusday).

Engines from Exeter along with an environmental protection unit from Newton Abbot were sent to a report of a chemical that had been spilled on the road in Yeoford Way just after 9.30am.

On arrival the crew confirmed that this was Sodium Hydroxide which had leaked from a delivery lorry.

The crew used two breathing apparatus wearers and environmental protection equipment to remove the pallet from the van to gain access to the leaking drum.
