Fire services in the south west have joined together to identify the seven fatal factors that link most home fire deaths in the region. The report has been compiled using research data from a total of 88 deaths from 2008 to 2013.

The Bishop of Crediton, Nick McKinnel, has pledged to buy and eat only local food this Lent, wherever possible.

Bishop Nick and his wife Jan will buy only food grown and produced in Devon and Cornwall throughout the six weeks of Lent, which begins this week on Ash Wednesday.

Call for cyclists to support Hospiscare

Lycra-clad cycling enthusiasts are being called to take part in the second Kitsons Devon Classic Bike Ride which is supporting local charity Hospiscare in 2014. The popular bike ride, taking place on Sunday July 20, features a challenge for all cycling abilities across a choice of three routes, adding a different element to the event and allowing individuals to pick between 55, 85 and 100 mile routes. A possible outbreak of mumps at Clyst Vale Community College in Broadclyst has seen health authorities ask the public to check they have had two doses of the MMR vaccine. In all twenty possible cases have been reported at Clyst Vale affecting both students and teachers and has been connected to Cullompton Rugby Club who cancelled games on Saturday 1st March to reduce the risk of further infection. Schedule delayed at noisy Exeter plant

Following last week’s steam blowing at the Exeter Energy from Waste plant, which generated significant noise, work is underway to mitigate the sound before the schedule resumes.

Before the plant can go into operation, steam is blown through the pipework to dislodge any grit or dust that could otherwise catch in the turbines. This is a completely safe procedure, and has to happen several times to ensure the pipework is completely clear. It does not form part of normal operating procedures.

Sidmouth's Beach Management Plan project team are holding a drop-in session at Sidmouth Sailing club next Thursday, 6 March, from 3pm to 7pm.

The public are invited to drop in at any time between 3pm and 6.30pm to learn more about the initiative, to give their views and provide local knowledge and information so the project team is properly informed.

The aims of the EDDC-sponsored project are to make sure Sidmouth's sea defences are performing as expected and to consider what needs to be done to reduce the rate of erosion at East Beach.

Topsham sandbags to be collected

People in Topsham are being asked to keep roads clear of parked vehicles when the City Council collects its sandbags on Friday (7 March). The bags were used in Topsham during the recent bad weather, helping to prevent more than 40 properties from flooding.

The local authority will be sending a lorry around to retrieve the bags from outside individual properties.

Residents can keep the bags if they wish but these will need to be taken inside or stored out of sight, otherwise they will be picked up by the Council.

The Isca Historical Photographic Collection celebrates its 40th Anniversary this month.

Established by Peter Thomas, Exeter’s longest established local author, photographer & lecturer, the collection protects the negative archive of the Henry Wykes Studio of Exeter. The studio had amassed an archive of 42,000 images that over the last 40 years has been greatly expanded and now contains some of Exeter’s rarest photographic images.
