Vaughan Williams' Second Symphony has been described as the musical equivalent of Monet’s paintings of the sun rising over a foggy Thames. Actual London sounds fleetingly emerge from an exquisitely woven musical tapestry - the chimes of Big Ben, the cry of a lavender-seller. Central to the symphony’s success is the wonderful limpid scoring, which Vaughan Williams felt in later life that he had never bettered.

An illustrated tour through the dark story of our fascination with murder, with Dr Lucy Worsley, BBC TV presenter, renowned historian and Chief Curator at the charity Historic Royal Palaces. She’ll not only examine some notorious crimes and criminals, but also explain how murder became a form of middle-class entertainment through novels, plays, paintings, and the press. Starting with an horrific early nineteenth-century serial-killer in the East End of London, she’ll end with the tame drawing room dramas of Agatha Christie.

Bring in the New Year with style with the BSO's annual celebration of all things Viennese. The glories of the Vienna dance-halls are brought to life in a bubbling selection of waltzes, gallops, polkas and marches by Johann Strauss and his contemporaries.

The full glory of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra playing Strauss as it should be played is always a highlight of the year, and this January the Orchestra is joined by young Viennese maestro Thomas Rösner who has been enjoying great success across the opera houses of Europe and the US.

Higher Uppacott is a grade one listed building of rare and national importance. RD&E wins national Genomics Medicine Centre

A ground-breaking genomic medicine project, which aims to establish England as a world leader in the fight against cancer and rare disease, will be led in the South West by the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E) working in partnership with other hospitals across Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

The RD&E has been selected today by NHS England as one of 11 centres in England that will jointly lead its 100,000 Genomes Project.

Changes to 56 bus service during roadworks

Stagecoach South West confirmed today (22 December) that, for the duration of the upcoming A30 to Exeter Airport roadworks, it will be necessary for the 56 service to operate a special emergency timetable.

For the duration of the Exeter airport road works the road between the A30 and Exeter Airport will be open in one direction only.

This closure will be in place from Monday 5th January for approximately 6 weeks.

Accountants and financial advisers Old Mill have turned £50 into £5,772.40 for Children’s Hospice South West.

Old Mill’s Exeter office took part in Ashfords Solicitors CHSW £50 challenge, where businesses are given £50 which they then use to raise as much money as they can for charity.
