Record crowds attend Dartmoor Folk Festival

A resurgence in the popularity of folk music, song, dance and crafts resulted in record crowds attending the 38th Dartmoor Folk Festival at the weekend.

Local and national artists entertained audiences at the event held at South Zeal, near Okehampton.

The festival included concerts, dances, a Dartmoor Fayre, a ceilidh, folk service, craft displays, music hall, pub sessions, a ramble on Dartmoor and music, song and dance workshops.

The packed programme of events also included a dedicated children’s festival.

Four arrested after Cowick Street assault

Detectives investigating a serious assault in Exeter at the weekend are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A 21-year-old local man was found unconscious in the road in Cowick Street, St Thomas, shortly before 4.20am on Saturday 8 August. He had suffered serious head and neck injuries.

Officers believe he had been the victim of an assault at the junction of Cowick Street and Old Vicarage Road before being struck by a car, driven by a 37-year-old man from the Exeter area. The collision is believed to be unrelated to the assault.

Haldon ladies Tug of War team are celebrating after coming third at the National Federation of Young Farmers Club finals, when they represented Devon at Tenbury Show in Worcestershire.

The team is made up of members from Bow, Newton St Cyres and Chagford including Emma Davie, Georgia Woodman, Alice Palfrey, Georgina Davie, Sophie Down, Lucy Thomas, Jess Palfrey and Alice Giles pulled against 8 other teams in the first heat, winning 4 outright, three draws and losing just one. Exeter Samartians join Twitter

The local branch of Samaritans is aiming to increase the information it provides and the audience it reaches by taking the unusual step of setting up a Twitter account.

The Exeter Mid and East Devon branch - which uses the name @ExeSamaritans - is one of the first Samaritans branches in the country to open an account on Twitter, and will create tweets that will be sent to followers several times each week.

Crediton residents asked to pool flood info

Crediton residents have so far provided a wealth of information about flooding vulnerabilities around the town as part of a community project being led by the University of Exeter, and now researchers are calling for more people to get involved.

Flooding effectively cuts off Crediton when the Rivers Yeo and Creedy burst their banks and the project needs residents to provide evidence about specific places that flood, offer their views about the causes and suggest ideas about what can be done to prevent future flooding.

Cardiac arrest survival rates high at RD&E

Well over a third of patients who suffered cardiac arrest at the RD&E Hospital in Exeter last year survived and were later discharged from hospital compared to 18% nationally, a clinical study has found. The latest National Cardiac Arrest Audit Report compared hospital cardiac arrest survival data for the period April-December 2014. Some 37.5% of patients at the RD&E survived and were later discharged compared to a national average of 18.4% at hospitals across England. Warning of work on Bridge Road in Exeter

Essential work is to be carried out to the canal bridges on Bridge Road in Exeter.

On Monday 10 August and Tuesday 11 August, inspections and maintenance work will be undertaken on the swing bridge. Contraflow arrangements will be in place, with all traffic using the bascule bridge.
