Exeter Fanzone open for RWC semi finals

Exeter’s Fanzone is open this weekend for the Rugby World Cup 2015 semi final matches.

As well as live coverage of the games, there's a jam-packed entertainment schedule and the best local food and drink all... all in Northernhay Gardens in the city centre.

The schedule is as follows:

Saturday 24th October - Open noon-7pm

12.30pm: Fanzone Advantag: 23-19 youth band from North Devon Centre for Contemporary Music.

1pm: Fanzone Advantage - 5-15 youth band from North Devon Centre for Contemporary Music 1.30pm: La Vie En Rose

The next Exeter Raspberry Jam will take place on Saturday 7th November at Exeter Library between 10:00 - 12:00. It will take place in the Rougemont Room rather than Meeting Room 1. Just ask in the foyer if you're not sure where to go. As usual there will be lots to do, plenty of help and advice and pis to play with.

We will be running sessions on how to make an led blink and sonic pi, these are not bookable but available on a first come first served basis.

#GivingTuesday signs up 1,000 partners

Rainbow Living has joined more than 1,000 UK charities and businesses as an official partner of #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving at the start of the festive season.

The day, led in the UK by the Charities Aid Foundation, takes place on December 1 and follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday - two of the UK’s biggest shopping days. Students awarded Library of Congress Fellowship

Two University of Exeter postgraduates have won the opportunity to enhance their research at the largest library in the world, the Library of Congress in Washington DC, USA.

Rhian Keyse and Mathilde Pavis, both studying at Exeter, are amongst 27 postgraduate students and early career researchers to be offered the opportunity the Arts and Humanities Research Council International Placement Scheme (IPS) which provides funded research fellowships for doctoral students at world-leading international research institutions.

People in Exeter are being given the chance to quiz councillors on any key issues for the city.

Exeter residents are invited to put forward questions to members of the joint County and City Councils' Exeter Board, at their next meeting on 19 November at 5:30pm at the Civic Centre in Paris Street.

The Board allocates 15 minutes for their ‘open forum’, with 3 minutes per speaker, with a maximum of 3 - 4 speakers to allow time for discussion.

Royal visit celebrates Headway's move

Brain injury survivors from across Devon and Torbay were delighted this week to meet Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex at a special event with local brain injury charity Headway Devon.

During the visit, The Countess of Wessex toured the XCentre – which is the headquarters of Headway Devon as well as the charity’s Exeter-based day centre for people with brain injuries – speaking to people affected by brain injuries and supporters of the charity.

After hours of studying and hands-on training, Nicola Oakey, 25 has graduated from the pioneering Homebase Garden Academy, and secured a job working as a trainee horticulture writer at the RHS.

Over the last year Nicola, has spent the last year learning from leading horticulture experts, including academy mentor and award winning garden designer Adam Frost. During the programme she studied everything from planting to lawn care and landscaping, while also working full-time at her local Homebase store in Frome within the garden centre, helping customers create gardens they love....
