Last chance to enter Scene it St David’s

There are only days left to get your entries in for St David’s Neighbourhood Partnership (SDNP)’s photographic competition.

The competition – called 'Scene in St David’s' – is open to all St David’s residents and offers a £100 top prize, and £50 for the runner up – plus the same for under-16s. Alongside views of the area, entrants are asked to describe why the place in their photograph is special to them. The competition will be judged by a panel of regional arts and community professionals, it closes on 4th January and the winners will be announced at the SDNPs AGM in February....

Coding the Christmas tree for Exeter Library

If you’ve wandered past the Christmas tree in Exeter Library you might have noticed the interactive flashing lights and Christmas carols playing from its branches. But did you know the tree was programmed by young coders from Exeter’s very own CodeClub?

Meeting every Thursday afternoon after school, two groups of children aged 7-11 have been learning how to code with the expert help of Simon Belshaw, Kris Sum and their brilliant team of volunteers.

Prestigious award for Exeter scientist

A University of Exeter scientist has been awarded a Distinguished Investigator Award by the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, a US charity that funds research into the causes of mental illness.

Professor Jonathan Mill, of the University of Exeter Medical School, received the $100K (£66,000) award to support his research into the role of neurodevelopmental processes in schizophrenia. Professor Mill will look to study the mechanisms by which genes are activated and regulated during human brain development and how these processes may be involved in psychiatric illness.

Higher Woolbrook Park to get new street lights

Higher Woolbrook Park in Sidmouth is set to get brand new streetlights this year, following a routine maintenance inspection by Devon County Council contractors SSE.

In addition, in a separate scheme, Government funding will mean that 24,000 more lanterns across Devon will be converted to energy efficient alternatives by March 2018.

This follows a successful bid by Devon County Council to secure over £10m from the Department for Transport Challenge Fund.

Christmas tree recycling collection in Exeter

People in Exeter can recycle their Christmas trees in the New Year.

For those not on the City Council's garden waste collection service there will be an opportunity to take Christmas trees to one of the following sites on the weekend of 9 and 10 January

  • Car park at Mincinglake Valley Park (top end, off Stoke Hill near the community centre)
  • Car park at Heavitree Pleasure Ground (next to recycling banks, Whipton Lane near junction with Stanwey)
  • Car park at Holman Way, Topsham

Man drowns trying to rescue dog from sea

A man has died after trying to rescue his dog from the sea on New Year's Day.

The emergency sevices were alerted to people in difficulty in the water off Portmellon near Mevagissey at around 11am.

Two people were subsequently recovered from the sea.

One was recovered by a member of the public and brought to shore, the second person was recovered from the sea by the Coastguard helicopter and was taken to hospital.

The RNLI Lifeboat from Fowey and Mevagissey Coastguard Rescue Team were also in attendance.

Stagecoach South West has announced today substantial January sale bargains for customers using luxury Stagecoach Gold route 57 connecting Exmouth with Exeter.
