Queen of Crime’s hidden talents

Solving mysteries is the work of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple made famous by the creative hand of Agatha Christie but few are aware of another of the author’s attributes – her astute business sense.

The University of Exeter holds a collection of correspondence, including letters to and from her agents and publishers, which clearly illustrates her ability as a tough negotiator in all aspects of her literary output.

As part of the official 125th anniversary celebrations of Agatha Christie, the University of Exeter is hosting a conference 13 – 14 April. The ‘Hidden Horizons...

University vice chancellor pay row

University vice-chancellors were criticised today for enjoying significant pay rises as staff endured real-terms pay cuts and rises in pension contributions.

New figures revealed that Sir Steve Smith of the University of Exeter, was the fourth highest paid in the country with a package of £386,000.

The University and College Union said the lack of self-awareness from university bosses, who pleaded poverty when it came to paying staff, was an embarrassment to higher education. Pay and benefits for university leaders increased, on average, by more than £5,000 in 2011-12, with...

University fencers dominated the results table last Sunday as fencers from across Devon battled for the title of 2015 Devon Sabre Champion. Misha Jessel-Kenyon won the Men's Sabre and Izabela Sosnowska took the Women's title.

The best ever turnout for the annual Sabre contest - hosted at Newton Abbot - signals a growth in popularity for Sabre as the rarest of the 3 weapons in modern fencing (Foil and Épée being more common).

Sabre is quick and dynamic - you can score a hit with any part of the blade and the very softest of contact is all it takes. Electronic score...
