Exeter student to join team kayaking length of Wales collecting plastic

Brogan Coates, a second year marine biology student studying at the University of Exeter, is to join a team of women kayaking the length of Wales collecting plastic as part of a campaign to raise awareness of the damage that single-use plastics cause to our oceans every year.

The campaign, which first happened last year, is organised by ‘Love Her Wild’ an organisation designed to empower women into exploring the world around them.

Back by popular demand Topsham Rugby Club will be hosting their Car Boot Sale on the Bank Holidays this summer (Monday 7th May, Monday 28th May and Monday 27th August) from 9:30 am to 1pm.

Public on foot - free entrance. We would welcome a £1 donation for parking.

Sellers will be welcome to set up at 8am with fees £6 per car and small vans, larger vehicles and trailers at £10 each.

The clubhouse will be open with hot food and drinks available all morning and the Bar will also be open towards lunchtime, with guest ales and longstanding favourites on offer.

Police given more time to quiz man arrested on suspicion of murdering Bulgarian woman

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Gergana Prodanova from Exeter have been granted an extension to the custody of a 42-year-old Bulgarian man while they continue their investigations.

The man was arrested on Wednesday 10th August 2016 on suspicion of murder in connection with Gergana’s disappearance.

The 38-year-old Bulgarian woman was reported missing on Monday 8th August by work colleagues when she failed to turn up for her work shifts as a housekeeper at the Great Western Hotel in the St David’s area of the city over the weekend of 6th – 7th August.

Excellent results for Trust in NHS survey

The NHS Trust that runs community hospitals and community health and social care services across Exeter, Mid and East Devon ranks better than similar Trusts in nearly three quarters of all indicators, according to a national survey of staff published yesterday (23 February).

When compared to other Trusts that run acute and community services, the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust was rated better than average in 23 of the 32 key findings that make up the NHS Staff Survey for 2015.

Bystock Pools, one of Devon’s most loved wildlife sites, has been secured for the future by Devon Wildlife Trust. The popular East Devon nature reserve has been saved thanks to a record-breaking fundraising appeal. Ben Bradshaw, MP for Exeter, visited an optical practice in his constituency on Friday 4th December to find out why regular eye tests are so important in preventing blindness.

Man rescued from flood water near Exeter

A man was rescued from his car after becoming trapped in flood water near Exeter this morning.

One fire appliance from Exeter Danes Castle, one from Exeter Middlemoor and the boat from Exmouth were mobilised to Burrow Road in Broadclyst at 5.30am, after reports of a person trapped in their vehicle in flood water.

On arrival, fire crews confirmed that the vehicle was in flood water, contact was made with the person trapped inside.

Crews used water safety equipment to escort the male from the vehicle to safety.

Burrow Road has been closed due to the flooding...

Devon racecourse named one of best in Britain

Newton Abbot Racecourse has been named as one of the best racecourses in Britain for racehorse owners, after once again achieving Gold Standard from the Racehorse Owners’ Association (ROA).

Out of 60 racecourses in the country, Newton Abbot was one of 12 racecourses to be awarded the accolade, with others including Hamilton Park, Kempton Park and Market Rasen.
