Powderkeg Brewery wins major award

Powderkeg Brewery, based in Woodbury Salterton near Exeter, has gone straight to the top with its first award, having won Best Lager at The Beer Awards for its pilsner ‘Cut Loose’.

The Beer Awards are run by the world-renowned IWSC (International Wine & Spirit Competition), with the beers judged in a blind tasting by leading figures from the international beer industry. Winning ‘Best in Show’ in its category, Cut Loose was described as ‘one of the 16 best beers in the world’. Needless to say, it’s a big award for a microbrewery tucked away in a corner of the Devon countryside...

Cordons removed from Exeter High Street

The last of the cordons have been removed today (Tuesday) from Exeter High Street following the major fire at at the Royal Clarence Hotel.

A number of businesses remain closed due to damage caused by the fire.

In an update, a spokesperson for Andrew Brownsword Hotels said: “Andrew Brownsword Hotels continues to liaise with Exeter City Council and local businesses, as they work together in the aftermath of the fire.

Police announce knife amnesty

Devon and Cornwall Police is holding a knife amnesty this month to give people the opportunity to safely hand in potentially dangerous weapons. The amnesty will run from Tuesday 15 until Monday 21 November 2016. This initiative has been prompted by the recent legislation that now prohibits the sale or importation of ‘zombie knives’.

Police want to give people the opportunity to hand these shocking weapons in, along with any other unwanted knives, to take them out of circulation, avoiding them ending up in the wrong hands.

Lasting symbol of Remembrance carved for Exeter Cathedral

A new carving of a poppy has been completed at Exeter Cathedral in time for Remembrance Sunday. The decorated “corbel” stone will eventually be added high up on the eastern end of the Cathedral as part of a major programme of works in that area of the building that was funded by the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund. It was carved from a block of Salcombe stone by Gary Morley who has been a member of the Cathedral’s team of masons for over 25 years. Devon blind veteran to march at Cenotaph

A Second World War veteran from Devon will be marching at the Cenotaph in London this Remembrance Sunday (13/11) with the military charity Blind Veterans UK. Ron Wyman, 90 and from Honiton, feels strongly about Remembrance Sunday because of his experiences in the Armed Forces and is thankful to Blind Veterans UK that he can now attend the national Remembrance Sunday commemoration. Teignbridge helps make parking easy

Residents and visitors can now pay for parking by smartphone or card payments after Teignbridge District Council invested in the latest technology across its car parks.

Customers can now use cards and smartphone payment methods as a further convenient way to pay as well as paying by phone or using cash.

Work is also taking place to install 14 new machines in 11 car parks and upgrade 48 machines in the remaining 25 pay and display car parks across the district to allow payment by card, as well as cash at the machines.
