Recycle Devon urges residents to make a pledge and ‘wear what you have’

Devon residents are being urged to breathe new life into their old clothes and ‘wear what you have’ to help reduce their carbon footprint and to pass on clothes they no longer want to keep them out of the bin.

By making at least one of a series of pledges, residents will be entered into a prize draw with a chance to win one of 10 Duronic Fabric De-Bobblers.

An estimated 10,000 items of clothing are thrown away in the UK every five minutes - and last year £2.7billion was spent on clothes that were worn just once.

Health Secretary urges eligible residents in South West to get flu vaccine this winter

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has urged all those people in the South West who are eligible for the flu jab to get one this winter, as the government launches its drive to vaccinate 30 million people.

The drive comes as new research from Public Health England suggests that people who tested positive for both flu and Covid-19 were more than twice as likely to die, compared to those with Covid-19 alone.

The research also found that those with co-infection of the two viruses were more at risk of severe illness.

Pay by phone operator changing in City Council car parks

Paying by phone to park in Exeter City Council-run car parks is changing from Monday onwards.

From 7 September, RingGo will be providing the pay by phone transactions.

The Council is recommending RingGo usage as the safest way to pay for parking and has brought phone payments into line with cash, to encourage greater take up. The City Council has removed the convenience fee for paying to park by phone so that motorists pay the same price whatever payment method they choose.

Sing & Smile sessions for Golden Oldies

Daytime Sing & Smile sessions for the Golden-Oldies Charity are a big hit with hundreds of older people living across Exeter.

Small businesses and the tourism sector across Devon, Plymouth, Somerset and Torbay are among those who can benefit from the Growth Support Kickstart Grant Scheme offering grants of up to £3,000.

Application forms for the grant are available on the Growth Support Kickstart Grant website from noon on Tuesday 1 September.
