Every good leader needs to be risk aware. Do you know what risks exist in your business? Who owns each risk?

Leaders need to be aware of the risks that exist within their organisation and they need to understand how the risk process works and have confidence that they will be made aware of the risks whenever it becomes necessary.

Getting to use and understand risk can give an organisation a real advantage over its competitors. Risks include human, operational, reputational, procedural, financial, technical, natural, political and structural.

Following last month’s ‘turf cutting’ work is moving at a pace on the site of the new visitor centre, Seaton Jurassic. The old Tourist Information Centre has been demolished so that construction on the new centre can begin and the new car park entrance, at the Marsh Lane end of The Underfleet, is on schedule for completion by the end of the month. The short stay car park is now restricted to disabled users only and from 24 October will be closed completely with all traffic following the signed roadway to the long stay car park. The existing entrance to the car park is expected to close on...

Do you know how successful your business is?

What metrics do you use to measure your business?

How often do you look strategically at your business?

The end of the year offers an excellent opportunity to intelligently review how far you have come and what you will need to change to achieve the outcome that you want. This may...

Worrying delays in land searches

I have been receiving lots of complaints from individual constituents, businesses and local estate agents in recent months about the amount of time it’s taking to do land searches in Exeter.

There seems to have been a problem in Exeter City Council’s land search service. Earlier in this summer I was assured this was being addressed, but the latest figures are showing a rise rather than a fall in the back-log. This is very worrying and should be an absolute priority for the council to address.

I completely understand that all local authorities are under serious financial...

Have your say on the future of the Western route rail network

People across the South West can have their say on the future of the region’s rail network following the publication by Network Rail of the rail industry’s draft Western route study.

Open for consultation until January, the study looks at the demands that will be placed on this part of the rail network over the next 30 years, including significant increases in passenger numbers and the need to continue to drive and support economic growth in the region. Passenger numbers into Bristol are set to rise by half in less than a decade, while demand for journeys into London from the West...

British Transport Police (BTP) officers are appealing for the public’s help to identify two men they would like to speak to in connection with the theft of a passenger’s property from a train.

PC Dave Eveleigh, investigating officer, said: “The victim boarded a CrossCountry service at Newton Abbot about 2pm to travel north to Sheffield.
