Solar firm lights up Exmouth town centre

Exmouth’s Christmas spirit has been given an extra festive boost with a beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the heart of the town.

Exmouth town’s Christmas display on the Strand has been lit up with new fairy lights and festive decorations, thanks to local businessman Marcus Di-Vincenzo, from solar energy firm, MIG Renewable Technologies.

The tree which is placed in the town centre each year is usually dressed with a simple set of fairy lights, but is always left looking a little bit bare, according to the renewable energy enthusiast.

£15m roofs scheme for listed church buildings

The Church of England has welcomed a dedicated £15 million fund, announced by the Government on Wednesday 3rd December, for the repair of roofs and rainwater goods on listed church buildings.

The Chancellor announced the Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund in his Autumn Statement. Grants between £10,000 and £100,000 will be available to listed places of worship of all faiths and denominations across the UK, where roof and rainwater goods repairs are deemed to be urgent and necessary.

Jenny gives up Christmas to help needy kids

Exeter resident, Jenny Fox, 25, is giving up her family Christmas to support disadvantaged children in need of a magical Christmas experience.

Jenny will be travelling to the CHICKS charity retreat in Brentor, Devon, where she will be joined by five other volunteers, three charity staff and over a dozen disadvantaged children for a residential Christmas break.

You can hear the sound of former bustling coral reefs dying due to the impact of human activity, according to new research from the Universities of Exeter and Essex .

Coral reefs are amongst the noisiest environments on our planet and healthy reefs can be heard using underwater microphones from kilometres away.

However, scientists have found that coral reefs impacted by human activity, such as overfishing, are much quieter than protected reefs, and this can have a big impact on the fish and invertebrates which rely on the reefs for survival.

Chiefs side to face La Rochelle

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter says a different “mental challenge” awaits his players as they prepare to tackle European Challenge Cup opponents La Rochelle for the second time inside a week at Sandy Park tomorrow (3pm).

South West Water bills to fall

South West Water's household customers can look forward to improved services and average bills pegged to 7% below inflation by the end of the decade, following today's Final Determination of the company's 2015-20 business plan by water regulator Ofwat.

As well as keeping bills down, South West Water will spend about £1 billion on improving the region's water and wastewater services. This follows a 7% bill reduction last year and a price freeze this year, to April 2015.

Jurassic Park style DNA sampling at RAMM

DNA from a rare specimen of an extinct mammal will be sampled, Jurassic Park style at the Ark, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery’s archive.

Although, unlike in the film, the technology doesn't yet exist to bring the animal back to life, the DNA will be important for a research project into the species. Exeter pupil honoured at charity book launch

After half a million people have fled their homes due to Typhoon Hagupit, drawings and paintings by the UK’s best young artists, including a pupil of St Leonards C of E Primary School, Exeter, were published on Tuesday 9 December in a new picture book entitled The Day The Wind Blew.

The new book is the culmination of a UK-wide illustration competition jointly launched by disaster relief charity ShelterBox and national charity The Reading Agency’s Chatterbooks network of children’s reading groups. The book has already enjoyed endorsement from top authors.

Met Office issues weather warning of ice

A weather warning of ice has been issued for parts of Devon as temperatures are set to drop tonight.

The Met Office said ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces during Friday night and early Saturday morning, particularly where showers have occurred during Friday. The showers will fall as sleet or snow over hills and to low levels in the north.

People are advised to take extra care.

The warning is valid from 5pm until 11am tomorrow.
