Dartmoor’s landscape is among the richest in western Europe in terms of its prehistoric archaeological remains. Dartmoor contains the longest stone row in the world and has the greatest number of archaeological sites out of all the UK National Parks. In fact 60% of all stone rows to be found in England are on Dartmoor and 1/3 of all stone rows in the UK and Brittany are on Dartmoor.

The woodlands of the south west of England are very special places for wildlife. Close to the Atlantic ocean, they provide conditions for plant life that are not found in most of the rest of the UK.

We are celebrating, through the Make the Small Things Count project, the woodland wildlife that can easily go unnoticed and invite you to take a moment to have a really close look at this special habitat by visiting the fantastic exhibition of photographs at the Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centre, Princetown. Councils call for more devolved powers

Council leaders across Devon and Somerset are calling for more devolved powers from Westminster.

The two county councils, Plymouth City Council, Torbay Council and the 13 district councils have all submitted a Statement of Intent to the Government.

They have been joined by Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks and the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership which represents local businesses and councils in Devon, Somerset, Plymouth and Torbay.

A longhouse is a medieval farmhouse in which both people and cattle were accommodated under a single roof. Higher Uppacott is rare and of national importance. Visit the Dartmoor Conservation Garden on Sunday 6 September 2015 and enjoy a fascinating FREE mini moss and lichen safari with Jen Howard, Education Officer with Plantlife, the UK’s leading wild plant conservation charity.

Mosses are very small plants which absorb moisture through their leaves. They act like sponges and can absorb huge amounts of water. Lichens are made up of a mutual relationship between a fungus and an alga. The fungus forms the main body of the lichen providing protection for the alga while the alga manufactures food using the sun's energy.

Habitat management and better summers in recent years have produced large numbers of beautiful and threatened orchids and damselflies on Dartmoor.

Dartmoor National Park (DNP) has been in a management agreement with the landowner of a cluster of haymeadows on the edge of Widecombe-in-the-Moor for over 20 years now. The fields were in urgent need of management, as no hay cut or grazing was taking place, and the flowers were beginning to disappear under thick grass, bracken, and thorn bushes.

Cyclist found with head injuries on Dartmoor

Police are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist was found with serious head injuries on Dartmoor on Wednesday 26 August.

The 68-year-old cyclist was found at 4.50pm lying unconscious on the B3212 between Postbridge and Moretonhampstead.

He had sustained a serious head injury, considered life-changing, and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital by air ambulance. He remains in hospital in a serious condition.

The man, from Essex, appears to have been cycling alone between Postbridge and Moretonhampstead.
