While other places may quieten down during the cold and wet winter months, East Devon District Council’s Countryside rangers and their team of over 100 volunteers are busy maintaining nature reserves and carrying out vital conservation work.
This winter, volunteers are working on a range of projects, including hedge laying at Knapp Copse, scrub clearance at Trinity Hill and site improvements to Seaton Marshes, part of the Seaton Wetlands nature reserve. This is a busy time for conservation work as projects can take place with less disruption to visitors and wildlife.
2017 is set to be the busiest summer season yet for East Devon's two Education Rangers, with more than 60 groups already booked for a day’s outdoor learning experience, enjoying East Devon’s outstanding environment.
Alongside working with school groups, the rangers will also be working with cubs, scout, brownie and rainbow groups and running events such as Fun in the Stream, night walks, bug hunts and rockpooling for local families and visitors.

East Devon’s Countryside team has welcomed a report produced by the Institute of European Environmental Policy for Friends of the Earth Europe which has revealed the many benefits of time spent outdoors.
The report demonstrates that obesity, mental health problems, social exclusion and exposure to light and noise pollution are often determined by wealth, with those from lower income families at higher risk (Lee & Maheswaran, 2011).
East Devon District Council is delighted to announce that the 2017 events guide for Countryside has been published.
The guide, which runs from April through to September, is jam-packed with outdoor events and activities for all ages, which will take place across the district.

During half term families can join the East Devon Countryside Rangers at Seaton Wetlands on Tuesday 14 February 2017 for a day of fun learning how to make gardens more wildlife friendly, followed by bird watching for children.
During the Wildlife Gardening event, which will take place between 10am to 2pm, one of the Countryside Rangers will demonstrate willow coppicing and refreshments will be served from the Discovery Hut. No booking is required for this event. Cost for materials: £7.50 per bird box kit, £3 for other craft activities.
