Rare Civil War pamphlets to be auctioned

A collection of propaganda pamphlets written during the years following the English Civil War are to be sold at Chilcotts September sale.

The fascinating 17th Century documents were discovered by the Chilcotts team in amongst books and papers during a routine house clearance in Exeter.

Auctioneer Duncan Chilcott explained: “Our research uncovered that one of these pamphlets, The Kings Cabinet opened: or certain packets of secret letters & papers was based on letters written by King Charles I, taken from his campaign chest after the battle of Naseby in June 1645....

A comment in a donor file has begun an intriguing search involving international commerce during England’s Civil War, silk togs, and a fake letter that may have finished a career... Shelley Tobin, RAMM’s Curator for Costume, reports:

Family treasures

A silk robe and quilted velvet tarboush (hat) were presented to RAMM in 1965 by Miss Mollie Prideaux, who referred to herself as the only surviving member of her family who knew their origin. They had belonged to an ancestor, Edward Barnard, not to be confused with the famous seventeenth-century philosopher and astronomer....

Come and enjoy the Wardour Garrison's return to Poltimore House near Exeter and experience what it was like to live and fight during the English Civil War. Come and take a stroll in the Grounds or take a walk through time as you explore the House. In 1646 the end of Civil War in the south west was negotiated at Poltimore, and the Treaty of Exeter was signed in the Great Hall at Poltimore - in the fine east-facing room re-modelled in about 1740 as the Saloon.

Refreshments will be available in the Chapel.
