This year the FREE lunchtime recital will take place on Wednesday 17th June in St Stephen’s Church (next to House of Fraser) on the High Street where delicious fresh and Fairtrade refreshments will be served throughout the day.

Devon man donates pension to church project

Michael Gunn, a member of St Luke’s Church at Newton Poppleford, one of the first people to cash in his pension under the government’s reforms, has donated a sum of it to the church building repair fund.

Mr Gunn, 57, received his funds yesterday (April 7) under the new scheme allowing over 55s to cash in a defined-contribution pension fund. He will also pay for his daughter’s wedding and take his wife on a cruise.

Churchwarden Haylor Lass explained that, following a fire in 2011, the repair plans have been slow and that Mr Gunn’s donation will give them the “kick-start”...

Holy Week worship at Exeter Cathedral

Exeter Cathedral has published listings of this year's services for 'Holy Week'.

The programme begins on Palm Sunday (29th March) with a dramatic procession of palms from St Pancras Church in the Guildhall Shopping Centre (9.45am).

Much of the worship will be led by the Cathedral Choir, who also give a devotional performance of John Stainer's Crucifixion on Good Friday (3rd April) at 19.30

Enjoy some magical musical moments interpreted in eye-catching floral arrangements – romantic, celebratory - with lots of rhythm! A major fundraising event towards the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of this fine 15th century Grade 1 listed building, Crediton is thought by some to be one of the finest parish churches of its kind in Devon.

Hotbott cushions keep churchgoers warm

The Diocese of Exeter has re-usable ‘hot bott’ cushions to loan out to parishes to help keep church goers warm this winter.

The Church of England in Devon is exploring a variety of new and efficient heating systems for church buildings.

Three quarters of the more than 600 churches in Devon are listed buildings, and many are very old and large and difficult to heat.

The cushion contains a chemically-triggered re-heatable pad which remains warm for up to 90 minutes – longer than the average church service – and can be held or sat on in a pew or seat.

Rabbit-proof fence for Ottery cemetery

The Ottery St Mary Cemetery on Higher Ridgeway will now be protected from flower munching wild rabbits thanks to a £1,750 donation from local house builder Redrow.

Today Keith Miller, regional director of Redrow West Country, presented the Mayor of Ottery St Mary, Councillor Glyn Dobson with a cheque at Redrow's Otter Grange development, which is located next to the cemetery.

The funding will be used towards rabbit proof fencing to stop wild rabbits entering the grounds and causing damage to the grass and flowers that have been carefully planted by local residents.
