Discretionary grant fund launches in East Devon

A new Government Discretionary Grant aimed at supporting small businesses and charities in East Devon launches today, 10th June.

Online applications will be open for two weeks, from 10th June to 24th June at www.eastdevon.gov.uk/discretionary-business-grant . This follows previous schemes which supported businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors as well as small businesses more generally and has seen over £40m being deployed to over 3,000 businesses in the District. The fund aims to support businesses which were not previously eligible for grant funding.

Plans underway for next week’s city centre reopening

Preparations are well underway to help ensure Exeter city centre is safe and welcoming when many stores reopen their doors next week.

On Monday 15 June non-essential retailers will be allowed to reopen for the first time since the end of March, once they have completed a risk assessment. Hospitality businesses like cafes and restaurants can reopen from 4 July.

Temporary and permanent measures and changes are required to ensure the city centre remains a vibrant place to live, work, socialise, visit, shop and work.

A leading Devon law firm has jumped up the rankings for the Top 100 Trade Mark Filers of 2018-2019 to become the highest ranking firm headquartered in Devon and Cornwall on the list.

Stephens Scown LLP’s intellectual property (IP) team has risen to 64th in the top 100 UK trade mark filers with over 120 trade marks filed last year, and 58th in the top 100 EU trade mark filers with over 100 EU trade marks in the EU last year. The rankings for the Top Trade Mark Filers are presented annually by CITMA, the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys.

As part of a series of papers commissioned to mark the centenary of the Work Foundation, Exeter based Dr. Peter Totterdill was invited to contribute a ‘provocation’ paper exploring how UK businesses can innovate to improve working practices and boost performance.

Exeter builders merchant open for business

The Exeter branch of RGB Building Supplies is open for business and welcoming all customers.

Those visiting are being asked to respect and adhere to the strict social distancing and general hygiene guidelines that the builders merchant has put in place. Yesterday, it was announced that in the UK all non-essential retail stores in England will be allowed to re-open from 15 June, on the proviso they are ‘COVID secure’. The Prime Minister also confirmed that open air outdoor markets and car showrooms can open from 1 June.

While this easing of lockdown restrictions is undoubtedly good news for retailers and suppliers, most of whose businesses will have been hit hard by being unable to trade as usual for the past two months, reopening under social distancing rules now brings a whole new set of challenges.

New click and collect tech aims to boost local firms during lockdown

A technology firm is launching a unique ordering platform to help local businesses trade more safely and effectively during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Forage Lite, which is being launched today, will enable customers to order, pay for, and pick up goods, from local shops without having to come into the seller’s premises. Buyers only need a smart phone to access the new zero-contact click-and-collect way of shopping.
