National Trust launches 125th year with beacon lightings

The National Trust will be lighting beacons across the South West on Thursday 9 January as part of a national network of beacons to celebrate 125 years since the conservation charity was founded.

They will be lit at dawn to mark the moment that the charity was founded by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley to give people access to nature, to beauty and to history.

Locations where the beacons will be lit include Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. Chapel Carn Brea in Cornwall will be the most south westerly beacon lighting location in the UK, with beacons...

Hundreds of trick or treaters enjoyed free hot choccie, sweets and homemade cakes at the Beacon Heath home of the lovely McHutchon family.

Gemma and Mark, with their friends from Isca Church, which is based in Beacon Heath, host this event every Halloween.

Interpretation panels developed for East Devon parks

History of much loved East Devon parks and gardens will be captured for posterity thanks to Heritage Lottery Fund award of £9,500

Interpretation panels for each of East Devon District Council’s eight parks and gardens are currently being developed by the council using information provided by local museums and local community members/groups. East Devon’s in-house design team are currently producing these ready for installation this spring.

Go along to the biggest and best ever Beacon Heath Summer Fete on Saturday July 2 from 12pm to 3pm.

The fete takes place at St James School and the neighbouring buildings, The Beacon Community Centre, formerly the Knight Club and The Beacon Nursery.

Lots of local organisations are taking part and it promises to be a great day out. Sidmouth beacon to be lit to mark Queen’s birthday

East Devon District Council Chairman Cllr Stuart Hughes will be lighting a beacon on Sidmouth seafront on Thursday (April 21) to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday.

The beacon will be among a chain of more than 1,000 beacons to be lit across the country that evening to mark Her Majesty’s milestone anniversary. The Queen will light the first one in Windsor.
