Seaside entertainment featuring puppets, magic and songs will return to Devon’s beaches, promenades and quaysides this summer thanks to apprenticeships helping to keep traditional performance forms alive and well through training emerging local artists.

Promenade shows with slapstick, songs and Punch and Judy have become increasingly rare as holiday habits change but that won’t be the case in the county as new trainees run free performances including puppetry, escapology, blade box routines and storytelling.

Bathing water season begins in Devon

The bathing water season started on 15 May with the Environment Agency carrying out regular testing of water quality at designated bathing sites across Devon and Cornwall until the end of September. High standards of water quality at swimming locations are important for everyone’s enjoyment of beaches across the south west. Throughout the bathing season the Environment Agency will issue warnings of any forecasted pollution risk on its Swimfo website. Blue Flags will be flying high above the beaches of Sidmouth and Exmouth from this week and these beaches, along with Seaton and Budleigh have also won prestigious Seaside Awards too ranking them among England’s best in the country.

Housebuilder colleagues carry out beach clean up

Colleagues from Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes have been swapping their day jobs for bin bags - by volunteering with Teignbridge District Council.

The finance team took to the beach at Dawlish Warren as part of a clean up event organised by the local council.

For the first time Teignmouth has received the prestigious Blue Flag award and joins Dawlish Warren, celebrating its own 21st consecutive year, in being recognised as amongst the best beaches in the UK.
