Marine litter can undermine the psychological benefits of coastal environments, a study has shown.
The beneficial effects of the blue environment to human health and well-being are well documented, but there has been little research into how the growing global issue of marine litter might negate them.
To measure this, Plymouth University secured funding from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to assess public reaction to the differing conditions of coastlines.
With summer in full swing, pet owners from Exeter show a surprising lack of awareness when it comes to their pet’s hydration and are happy to let them drink puddle water, milk and even the nation’s favourite brew – tea. A survey carried out by pet product expert, PetSafe®, to raise awareness about the importance of pet hydration, has found that over 6 in 10 (60%) of Exeter pet owners are unclear about how much water to give their pets to drink. Most worryingly, the survey revealed that over half of Exeter pet owners (55%) wouldn’t know how to tell if their pet was dehydrated. Further...

Today the medium-sized business produces over 500,000 meals each week for cats and dogs throughout the UK. Selling through local pet shops and popular online shopping sites, Forthglade’s sales have soared, with an impressive 50% growth...

A Teignbridge man, found guilty of offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, has been told by Exeter Magistrates Chair of the bench "you will not keep animals ever again."
Leslie Weatherill, 73, of The Hams, Ide, was found guilty at Exeter Magistrates Court in March, after failing to improve the squalid conditions that he kept ponies and dogs in.
The court had heard how Mr Weatherill kept his ponies on an area of scrub and woodland near Doddiscombsleigh which, according to a national expert on horses, was inadequate for their needs and so their welfare was severely...

The yarn-bomb will be on proud display throughout the Killerton Cider...

Living Coasts has sent 20 penguins to Eastern Europe as part of a major new initiative. The coastal conservation charity has donated the birds to Tblisi Zoo in the former Soviet republic of Georgia to start a brand new colony.
Living Coasts Operations Manager Clare Rugg explained: “They have built a penguin exhibit from scratch with our advice and input – we have been working with them because they have just joined EAZA, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, the body which represents top zoological collections across Europe. This is the first EAZA move to Georgia.”
