Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau is seeking new trustees.
The charity helps people resolve their problems by providing information and advice, and by influencing policy makers. They are committed to valuing diversity and promoting equality, and need skilled individuals to join their trustee board and help provide leadership.
Steve Barriball, Chief Executive of Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau said: “People from all backgrounds are welcomed. Experience of using, working in or volunteering with the CAB is not essential. We are looking for people with a wide variety of skills and a...
Teignbridge District Council is warning residents not to divulge their personal details over the phone as bogus callers target the area.
Fraudsters have contacted residents informing them that they may be eligible for a Council Tax refund, before asking them for their bank account details.
Any resident who has given their account or card details to a caller like this should contact their bank immediately. The caller has then said they will process their refund if they provide their bank account details. Luckily none of them parted with their bank account details.
The West County’s rich past gained a new champion this week when the South West Heritage Trust took over management of heritage services previously run by Devon and Somerset County Councils.
The two councils have created the Trust as a way of ensuring a strong and sustainable future for the services.
The councils will be the Trust’s main funders, but the new organisation, as an independent charity, will also be able to seek funding from other places.
The Trust’s responsibilities now include the popular Museum of Somerset in Taunton, Somerset’s Historic Environment...
The number of Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) claimants in Devon has fallen to a record low again in October, in line with the national trend. Total claimants now stand at 4,118, or 0.9% of the working age population, representing a further fall of 105 claimants from September.
At a district level, overall JSA claimant numbers fell across the County with the exception of East Devon, which experienced a very small increase between September and October. The JSA claimant count rate in South Hams stands at just 0.6% of the working age population. The rate in Torridge stands at 1.5%, but...
A fearless Exeter granddad is still skydiving - despite having a terminal illness.
Sonny Hepburn, 71, was given 6-12 months to live last September 2013 after being diagnosed with cancer but continues to skydive after recovering from his chemotherapy sessions.
Skydiver Peter Brookes said: “I have the privilege to call Sonny a good friend and so do my two boys Michael and William. They are only three and four but already see how being positive can change our own lives and the lives of others around us. What an amazing role model Sonny is for the next generation.
Foster carers from across Devon were celebrated for their exceptional service to Fostering Devon.
The annual Carer Celebration Awards took place at County Hall in Exeter where over 60 carers received a certificate of appreciation. Around 120 people (including many foster children) gathered to recognise the achievements of carers who have given between 5 and 30+ years of their lives to fostering.
The longest-serving carers were Jenny and Charles Thorpe from Teignmouth, Linda and Graham Denning and Sandra and Robin Cooke, all dedicating more than 30 years to fostering. These...
Exeter’s local charity Hospiscare is hoping that Christmas has come early after £3,540 were left in carrier bags outside one of its city shops.
Police, who are temporarily holding the cash, have appealed for the mystery donor to come forward to confirm that they intended the money to go to the charity. If the money is not claimed it will go to Hospiscare in six weeks time.
Glynis Atherton, Hospiscare chief executive, said: “The shop manager was amazed and immediately contacted the police who are looking after the wads of £20 used notes. This sum would provide almost a whole...
This week we pay tribute to the leaders of the 355 voluntary organisations in Exeter that all rely on the dedication, energy and commitment of around 2,000 trustees in order to support their beneficiaries.
Hundreds of events will be taking place this week as charities use Trustees’ Week as a time to thank the one million trustees across England and Wales for their time and dedication.
Trustees are the people ultimately in charge of a charity. They make decisions that help charities achieve their aims and change their beneficiaries’ lives.
The weather may be relatively calm at the moment, but the Met Office have issued another yellow weather warning for rain tomorrow (Thursday) which is set to continue through Friday, into Saturday.
Forecasters say a developing frontal system is expected to bring another period of persistent rain, which will be heavy at times, to parts of the southern England later on Thursday and into Friday. The rain is likely to be accompanied by strong and gusty winds.
There is a risk of localised flooding, exacerbated by fallen leaves blocking drainage courses.
Retail entrepreneur Theo Paphitis has invited designer Soula Zavacopoulos, from Chawleigh, to sell her ‘Wisdom of Kids’ books in 98 Ryman stores to raise funds for BBC Children in Need.
Ryman nor Soula Zavacopoulos will make a penny from the venture – because all of the profits will go directly to the charity.
A special price of £4.99 (£2 off the normal retail price) has been set for this fundraising campaign and at least £4 from the sale of each book will benefit BBC Children In Need, helping disadvantaged children across the UK.
