Exeter Library to live stream TEDx

Due to massive public demand TEDxExeter has found an additional venue for the public to attend this year's conference.

The talks will be streamed live from the Northcott Theatre to an audience of 80 people in Exeter Library's Rougemont Room. Tickets for the 2015 conference on 24 April 2015 sold out in a record two hours when they went on sale in December. Concessionary tickets went in 15 minutes! Exeter projects are Lottery winners

New figures reveal that over £2.9 million of National Lottery funding was invested in Exeter projects last year alone. Across the city, 49 grants were awarded last year; benefiting local arts, sports and heritage projects alongside community groups helping those most in need. Grants were awarded to a wide range of projects in 2014, including:

  • £8,675 to Southbrook School to buy new camping equipment for extracurricular outdoor activities.

Ninety guests joined The Down’s Syndrome Association(DSA) and Down Syndrome International(DSi) at Sandy Park on February 6th for an exclusive Evening with Damon Hill OBE.

A377 closed after accident

Police last night closed the A377 after a car rolled onto its roof at Newbridge Hill, Newton St Cyres.

Two fire engines from Danes Castle were sent to deal with the incident at about 7pm.

On arrival the crew confirmed that there were three people all out of the vehicle with nobody else inside.

The crews made the vehicle and scene safe and the incident was left in the care of Ambulance and Police.

Kids cook up a new rule book at Bella in Exeter

RWC Legacy Project inspires Exeter youngsters

A group of young people in Exeter looking to progress their careers have received a major boost thanks to an Exeter City Council Rugby World Cup 2015 legacy project.

Nine unemployed 17-22 year olds have completed the two-week Rugby Empowering Employment Programme, run by Motiv-8sw.

Set up by Exeter City Council and the Exeter & the Heart of Devon Employment & Skills Board, he Rugby World Cup 2015 legacy scheme aims to inspire and boost the prospects of 16-24 year olds struggling to find work.

The charity team at Otter Nurseries has announced a fundraising total of just under £9,000 for 2014 charity of the year, emergency medical couriers Devon Freewheelers.

Marketing Manager Sabine Taylor said: “We were always hoping to raise enough to help buy the charity a new bike, and thanks to the amazing generosity of staff and customers, we are bang on target.

“Devon Freewheelers seems to be a charity close to the hearts of many people in this area, and everyone was prepared to dig deep for them.”

Another ten for Bonners Glen!

East Devon District Council and Sanctuary Group have worked together once again to provide extra affordable housing in Axminster.

In 1997 and 2010 Sanctuary completed the first and second phases of the re-development of formerly owned council land to provide 16 homes and a block of 8 flats.

Now a further ten homes have been completed, which sees the successful delivery of the third and final phase of this development. The latest project involved demolishing two empty council properties and replacing them with ten new affordable homes.

We are about to start two studies looking at the effects of different exercise training interventions on the health profile of pre-menopausal women.

Mark Foster to speak at sports awards

Britain’s most decorated male swimmer Mark Foster has been confirmed as the guest speaker at this year’s Exeter Foundation Devon Sports Awards, held in association with Active Devon.

Mark represented England and Great Britain for 23 years, winning 47 major international medals, competing in 5 Olympic Games and breaking the World record 8 times. Since retiring, Mark enjoys a thriving television career including competing on Strictly Come Dancing in 2008.
