Celebrating the First Anniversary of the official opening of the Walronds, Cullompton there will be a fantastic Tudor Fayre. After nearly 4 years under scaffold, on 13th June 2014 HRH The Duke of Gloucester officially opened the restored and renovated Walronds in Fore Street, Cullompton. In the intervening 12 months the house has been used by a large number of groups for a variety of purposes and volunteers have worked tirelessly in the gardens to provide a charming and relaxing space for the local community to enjoy.

Caravan owners saved by carbon monoxide detector

Rick and Jeanette Wills narrowly escaped being poisoned by the fumes from the gas fridge in their caravan. Rick Wills explains: “It was a chilly night so my wife and I shut all the windows before going to bed.

"We were awoken by the Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector at 2am. I couldn’t smell anything, so I took the alarm off the wall and put it under a pillow to stop the noise. As an afterthought I opened all the windows, including the skylight. When we woke in the morning we both felt awful.”

A hairdressing apprentice who started as a ‘Saturday girl’ has been promoted to manager of a new salon due to open in Plymouth.

Skills Group apprentice Holly Harrison, aged 20, will head up the new branch of Loose Ends Hair and Beauty in Foxwood Gardens, Plymstock, from July 5.

Holly has worked at the Dean Hill branch of Loose Ends Hair and Beauty for four years. She started on Saturdays before joining full-time after leaving school aged 16.

Sexual abuse involving children rises

Devon and Cornwall Police have responded to a report from the NSPCC released today, Wednesday, June 17, 2015, regarding reports of sexual abuse involving children.

The NSPCC suggests reports of sexual abuse involving children have risen from 747 in 2012/13 to 1,125 in 2013/14. The figures have come as a result of Freedom of Information Act requests to police forces nationwide.

Unite launch campaign to defend community hospitals

Unite Community members from across Devon will be starting a summer long campaign today (Thursday 18 June), to highlight cuts to community hospital beds with a protest outside County Hall in Exeter. Plans have been put forward to replace community hospital beds in Devon with a system of home care called “care closer to home”. Concerns are mounting that the loss of the beds will leave elderly and vulnerable patients recovering from operations and other treatments isolated, as well as putting pressure on over stretched critical wards at district hospitals.
