Julian Salvi is bracing himself for a “non-stop season” after settling in well to life with new club Exeter Chiefs.

Having spent the past four campaigns with Aviva Premiership rivals Leicester Tigers, the 29-year-old forward has opted for a fresh start down in the Westcountry, working under the guidance of Exeter head coach Rob Baxter.

As one of a number of new faces brought to Sandy Park by Baxter during the close season, Salvi has wasted little time in getting stuck into working life in Devon, pushing himself hard during the opening weeks of the club’s pre-season...

Protecting your firm's IP could pay off

The Chancellor’s recent Budget delivered a new incentive for companies to register their intellectual property rights, according to IP experts at Exeter law firm Stephens Scown. The draft Finance Bill published in the wake of the Budget has stopped tax relief for the amortisation (i.e. depreciation) of goodwill and other intangible assets. Ben Travers, intellectual property partner at Stephens Scown, said: “This change published in the Finance Bill means that any business which is selling intangible assets – such as a brand or goodwill - could get a better price if they register those...

Fewer UK businesses would fail if owners had more knowledge of the world of business prior to taking the plunge and setting up themselves, according to two thirds (63%) of SME owners.

Small business owners are now calling for more education for those in the process of setting up in business, as research today reveals many directors went into business blind and confess they made big mistakes along the way.

The research, conducted by Just Cash Flow PLC spoke to 250 small business owners, and 80% admitted that they didn’t know everything they needed to when they first set up...

Urgent appeal for organ donors

The number of people who donated organs has fallen for the first time in 11 years.

During 2014/15 more than 4,400 (4,431) people in the UK had their lives saved or improved by an organ transplant.

New statistics released today in the Organ Donation and Transplantation Activity Report 2014/15 shows the number of transplants has decreased from 4,655 in 2013/14 to 4,431 in 2014/15. This is a 5% decrease on last year and means that 224 fewer people received an organ transplant.

Of the transplants carried out, 1,092 were made possible by living donors who gave a kidney...

Will you Race For Life?

Women in Exeter are being urged to grab their last chance to enter Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at Westpoint Exeter as there is just one week left until registration closes. Over 5000 women have already joined a ‘pink army’ ready to take on cancer in the 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events on 25 and 26 July, but there are still places left. But every year the family do something special in memory of Rhys and pay tribute to the bubbly, carefree boy who...

Embarrassed BBC bosses appear to have ‘erased from history’ axed presenter Judi Spiers.

Just a month after she announced her last week on the station, two controversial Facebook postings seem to have been removed.

The first was a statement by BBC Radio Devon managing editor Mark Grinnell explaining his decision to drop the broadcasting star.

Another post, made by Judi and her team on the show’s last day, has also disappeared.

Observers believe it might be to do with the fact that both posts attracted more than 700, largely negative, comments.

It’s amazing how the gambling industry has evolved and embraced the internet as a way to get closer to gambling enthusiasts. It has certainly made gambling a lot easier and has opened an entire new way of attracting customers, through online casino promotions. You make a deposit and you get a bonus amount on the house that you can use to wager. The biggest strain you have to endure is to sit in front of your computer or laptop, or just pick up your smartphone or tablet and off you go into the amazing and sometimes dreadful world of one of the oldest vices in the universe. It’s certainly a...
