Dying Jo releases heartbreaking video in appeal for help

Dying Exeter mum Jo Smith has released an emotional video as part of her desperate attempt to raise funds to go to America for treatment.

In it, her five-year-old son Rudey makes a heart-breaking plea for help.

In it he says: "My mummy needs to go to America to get better."

Devon racecourse named one of best in Britain

Newton Abbot Racecourse has been named as one of the best racecourses in Britain for racehorse owners, after once again achieving Gold Standard from the Racehorse Owners’ Association (ROA).

Out of 60 racecourses in the country, Newton Abbot was one of 12 racecourses to be awarded the accolade, with others including Hamilton Park, Kempton Park and Market Rasen.

Alex among youngest directors with Barratt Homes

A successful graduate placement year with Barratt Homes in Exeter provided firm foundations for Alex Hugo’s career with the national housebuilder.

As a student Alex shone in his year with the housebuilder gaining experience in everything from land to sales and marketing.

He impressed the directors so much he was awarded a bursary for his final year of business studies and joined the team in Exeter after graduation as a trainee land manager.

Jo Pavey to open new day hospice in Honiton

We are thrilled to announce that Exeter athlete Jo Pavey will officially open our new £1.2m Kings House Day Hospice in Honiton next month.

Jo, who grew up near Honiton, says she is delighted to open the new centre which provides much needed support to terminally ill patients and their families living in East Devon and which is already oversubscribed.

Glynis Atherton, Hospiscare chief executive, said: “Jo lives locally so we are thrilled she has agreed to open Kings House which is proving so popular with local people.”

Devon’s richest raceday takes place next Tuesday (November 3) when high class horses will be heading to Exeter Racecourse to contest the grade 2 Sportingbet Haldon Gold Cup.

Soul Traders show off their crazy legs

Devon band Soul Traders showed off their crazy side prior to their recent gig and gave a ‘leg up’ to support cancer.

Lead singer Matt Byrne, who has survived tongue cancer never thought he would sing again when he was diagnosed with cancer six years ago.

The father-of-three from Exeter is rallying men, women and children in Devon to Stand Up To Cancer this October. The band also felt the sad loss of their friend and fellow singer Lara Schmidt who died from cancer in July 2014.

Devon Community Foundation hosted its annual Volunteer of the Year Awards sponsored by Quilter Cheviot, honouring the hard work and achievements of the many volunteers making a real difference in our Devon communities.
