Don't stay cold this winter

As temperatures drop, people living in Exeter and across Devon may be able to get extra help with their heating this winter thanks to a new scheme.

The CosyDevon service, which is operated by a partnership of some councils in Devon, including Exeter City Council, was one of only 20 bids that were successful in securing funding as part of the Government’s £25m Central Heating Fund. The Fund is designed to support local people living in homes that don’t currently enjoy the efficiency and comfort of gas central heating, which is much cheaper to run than most forms of electric heating...

Teignbridge District Council is asking residents and businesses for their views as they start the annual budget-setting process.

The council is preparing to debate its budget plans for the coming financial year and invites comment as it moves towards a final budget for 2016/17.

The initial proposals detail savings made by the council over the past year and planned savings in years to come with further investment in key projects that help support the economy and housing growth.

Teignbridge has had a good track record of ‘low or no’ council tax increases but, as no...

Call for ban on junk food TV advertising

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is calling for a ban on all junk food TV advertising before 9pm, as part of the Government’s Childhood Obesity Strategy, to help improve children’s health.

Millions of children across the UK are being exposed to junk food adverts during popular shows such as the X Factor and Hollyoaks.

Analysis by the BHF shows that weak regulations are creating loopholes that mean that food companies can advertise junk food - high in fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt - during programmes watched by children in the South West.

Shockingly, 13 junk...

Exeter City return to winning ways

Grecians complete the double over the O's

THREE FIRST-HALF goals from Exeter City secured a victory at the Matchroom Stadium as the Grecians returned to winning ways in Sky Bet League 2.

In a pulsating match, the hosts had taken the lead in the opening minute through an Ollie Palmer goal. But City responded magnificently, drawing level through Jayden Stockley in the fourteenth minute before Nichols put the away side ahead with his tenth league goal of the campaign. Stockley doubled his tally for the afternoon just after the half-hour mark to put City in the driving seat,...

Royal recognition for Cathedral stonemasons

Three of Exeter Cathedral’s stonemasons have been singled out for praise, with special commendations from the Worshipful Company of Masons as part of the Duke of Gloucester’s Award scheme.

Anna Steinmetzer, Matthew Hoskins and Owen Whitfield were given the honour for their work on the exterior of the chapel of St Edmund to the west of the Cathedral, which was completed last autumn. The trio were praised both for their teamwork and for the breadth and quality of their individual work.

The awards were introduced in 2007 in honour of HRH The Duke of Gloucester who, through his...

Bordeaux-Begles edge out Exeter Chiefs

Bordeaux-Begles 34 Chiefs 27: Match report

It’s not quite over, but Exeter’s hopes of advancing in this season’s Champions Cup are hanging by a thread after defeat away to Bordeaux-Begles.

Like two prize fighters battling away in the ring, the rivalling teams traded countless blows before the Englishmen were finally floored by Marco Tauleigne’s converted try ten minutes from time.

His late touchdown was the last of eight tries scored at the Stade Chaban Delmas and means Rob Baxter’s Chiefs side now need somewhat of a miracle to advance into the quarter-finals....

Beat the January blues with food

If you are prone to the January blues after an over-indulgent festive season, you could help researchers at the University of Exeter discover whether healthy eating can ward off depression.

Scientists have long known that depression is often linked to weight issues and poor diet – but there is a lack of evidence on whether a bad diet can actually cause depression or itself results from depression, and whether switching to healthier foods could help to keep low mood at bay.

The MooDFOOD study is recruiting 250 overweight people in and around Exeter and aims to provide the...
