A jobs freeze is being introduced by Devon County Council to manage a projected budget overspend.
The latest estimates show the budget will overspend by £8.1 million by the end of the financial year unless firm action is taken.
The jobs freeze will not apply to posts where the council would fail to meet its statutory responsibilities if it did not recruit a replacement worker.
In addition, no temporary or agency staff or consultants – apart from front-line social workers – will be taken on without the personal authorisation of chief executive, Phil Norrey.
Exeter City’s Ollie Watkins has been nominated for the League Two player-of-the-month award for December.
Ollie, who celebrated his 21st birthday on December 30, had a month to remember as he netted five goals in four games.
He started the month off with an impressive performance against Cheltenham Town where he helped set up City’s second goal in a 3-1 victory by crossing the ball in for David Wheeler to fire home from close range.
He then followed that up with a man-of-the-match display against Mansfield Town as he scored both goals as the Grecians recorded their...
In recent years politicians and decision makers around the world have been drawn to appealing to the human emotions of fear and hatred for their backing and support. It is clear that motivations such as ‘tribalism’ (expressed in prejudicial racism, sexism, nationalism, etc.) and ‘desire’ (culminating in global consumerism) have been woven into political discourse in ways maybe not so generally seen since the 1920s.
This rhetoric has coincided with enormous austerity cuts to welfare services, lower wages and also widespread deregulation of rules governing corporate economic...
While some start the New Year armed with resolutions to be more active or eat a healthier diet, others are contemplating more substantial changes in the form of a separation from their spouse, says family law specialist, The Family Law Company.
It is commonly reported that family lawyers receive a higher than usual number of enquiries in early January on ‘Divorce Day’, the first Monday back at work. The Christmas break is often held responsible for this increase for various reasons including finances and spending more time together leading to family rows.
Teignbridge is preparing to debate its budget plans and would welcome local comment as the council moves towards a final 2017/18 budget and looks further ahead to deal with different changes and challenges.
It’s asking residents to take part in an online survey with responses forming part of the budget-setting process before decisions are made on spending plans.
Draft plans include a 3.22% increase Teignbridge’s portion of council tax by £5, taking the average Band D price for district council services to £160.17.
As divorce enquiries are set to spike after the festive period, a South West law firm has produced a guide to surviving divorce, including advice from divorcees on hope to cope. The period straight after the Christmas holidays can be one of the peak times for couples to start divorce proceedings – so much so that the media has dubbed the first working day after the festive break “divorce day”. Liz Allen, partner and head of the family team at leading law firm Stephens Scown LLP explains: “The reasons for this spike in break ups are hard to pin point, but perhaps the financial stresses of...
