Upper Sixth biologists from Exeter School took part in a DNA and Gene Technology workshop run by team of bioscientists from Exeter University.
Sixth Former Rebecca Charman explained how they carried out a restriction digest, using highly precise micropipettes to add restriction endonuclease to samples of real human DNA in order to split the DNA structure into tiny fragments.
"We then used gel electrophoresis - a technique we have recently studied as part of our A Level syllabus - to separate the fluorescently labelled fragments based on their size.

New recruits are joining the growing ranks of Devon County Council’s Community Road Wardens.
Around a quarter of town and parish councils in Devon have now either signed up as Roads Wardens or have been trained or are waiting for training as part of the scheme.
Community Road Wardens can carry out a range of duties including minor work such as weed clearance, grass cutting, sign cleaning, small drainage work, and minor road repairs. They act as their town or parish’s primary point of contact with the County Council’s local Neighbourhood Highway Officers.

Construction of the final phase of a vital scheme to improve transport links between the Exeter and East Devon Growth Point and the city has today (Friday 10 February) been approved by Devon County Council’s Cabinet.
Councillors backed the £5.2 million scheme for the remaining section of the Tithebarn Link Road as well as the development of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the M5.
