Former criminal defence lawyer who switched to family specialism shortlisted in Family Law Awards
Associate Solicitor Galina Labworth from The Family Law Company has been shortlisted in the national Family Law Awards, just five years after switching from criminal to family law.
She is a finalist in the Family Law Associate Solicitor of the Year category, which celebrates a solicitor who the judges believe has made a major contribution to the field of family law through their practice, shown that they have provided outstanding client service and demonstrated teamwork within their firm, with external lawyers and/or other professionals.
Galina spent 10 years as a criminal defence solicitor in London before moving to Devon in 2006, where she continued working as a duty solicitor. During lockdown she decided to move into family law, from a desire to help the most vulnerable people in a different capacity.
She joined The Family Law Company in 2022 and became an Associate in 2024. Her caseload is 100 percent legal aid, ensuring that the most vulnerable in society have access to justice. She specialises in Children Law and Social Services intervention, and many of her cases are highly complex, requiring expertise, empathy and tenacity.
Galina is also committed to supporting the next generation of legal aid lawyers, providing help and guidance to paralegals and trainees. She has delivered talks to Exeter College students outlining what it really means to work as a legal aid lawyer.
