Mentors take part in networking advice session
Empowering Girls, the organisation which pairs women in business with Year 9 students at schools across Devon, recently hosted a free networking workshop for its volunteer mentors.
The session, held at Exeter College’s Future Skills Centre, was led by Judy Salmon, who donated her time to share practical advice and guidance. She provided mentors with insights, tools and confidence to enhance their networking skills.
Sarah Abrahams, CEO of Empowering Girls, said: “We are very grateful to our mentors, who give their time to support girls through the programme. Thanks to Judy donating her time, we were able to offer something back to them by staging this free workshop.
“Judy guided the group through the key stages of networking, with tips on what to do before, during and after an event, practical strategies, confident communication, and how to build meaningful connections that last. Thank you to everyone who attended - it was wonderful to see familiar faces and meet new mentors too. And special thanks to the Future Skills Centre for providing the space for the session.”
Empowering Girls Devon, founded by Sarah Abrahams in 2019, connects Year 9 girls (aged 13–14) with professional women who act as mentors, helping to build confidence, raise aspirations and provide positive role models. The organisation has recently become a Community Interest Company (CIC).
Since its launch, the programme has supported more than 800 girls and worked with over 240 mentors from 160 businesses, delivering in schools across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay. By introducing girls to women from a wide range of sectors, Empowering Girls Devon helps them challenge stereotypes, recognise their potential and explore future possibilities with confidence and ambition.
