A bumper month for Seaton Wetlands!

Throughout July, work has taken place at Seaton Wetlands to remove overhead power cables and move them underground. The work has caused disruption to visitors who were unable to access the site car park for most of the month. The work culminated in late July when a helicopter flew over the wetlands to remove the electricity posts.

The site is now open to visitors as usual and the overhead power cables which used to stretch across the Axe Valley have now been removed.

Cllr Marcus Hartnell, East Devon District Council's deputy portfolio holder for the enivironment, said: “The work completed by Western Power Distribution has dramatically opened up the landscape and provides increased opportunities for birds to thrive without the danger of electricity cables. The variety of bird life at the Wetlands is fantastic and visitors of all ages enjoy spotting kingfishers, waders and migrant birds throughout the year.  We’re looking forward to seeing the impact this change has and welcome you to come and do the same.’’

James Chubb, East Devon District Council countryside team leader, said: “We are delighted with how well the work has gone and must thank Adam Taylor Limited, Western Power Distribution and Kier construction for their conscientious approach to the site. Thank you also to the public who have been very compliant and understanding throughout this period.

‘’Despite the disruption we have had a bumper month of bird life and have spotted common sand piper, over 30 redshank, 10 black tailed godwit and 1 curlew sandpiper, a rarity from Russia. Please do come down and visit the site and enjoy the amazing views and rare bird life which calls the site home.’’

Throughout the summer the Discovery Hut at Seaton Wetlands is staffed by volunteers from 10am to 4pm. From here you can find out more about the site, hire pond dipping equipment, purchase drinks and ice creams and watch the resident harvest mice!

Seaton Wetlands is managed by East Devon District Council’s countryside team. The site is open 24 hours a day 365 days a year and is free to visit.
