For those interested in a bit of culture, the non-profit organization Eurasia is known for projects that bring different countries together through culture, history, and (perhaps most importantly) education. Their newest initiative, the international art competition and exhibition called "Art and Peace: The Great Victory of Life," celebrates the values of peace and coming together. Oscar Pistorius arrested after girlfriend shot dead

Today's news (15 February): South African Olympic and Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius has broken down in court sobbing today after prosecutors said they would pursue a "premeditated murder" charge over the death of his girlfriend.

An application for bail was postponed until next Tuesday and Mr Pistorius, 26, will remain in police custody not in prison as would normally be the case.

Update: Oscar Pistorius has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend and will appear in a Pretoria court on Friday, police have confirmed.

Three dead, including gunman, in Delaware courthouse shooting

Three people, including the gunman, have been shot dead at a courthouse in Wilmington, Delaware.

According to Yahoo News Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams said in a telephone interview on Monday that the shooter was killed by police. Williams says he was told the shooter shot and killed his wife and another woman, and wounded at least one other at approximately 8.10am. Williams says the couple were estranged.

Reports suggest that at least two other people were injured in the incident, their condition is so far unknown.

Pope Benedict XVI has made the shock annoucement that he is to resign at the end of this month, saying he is too old continue at the age of 85. He will step down after almost eight years in the post, having been elected in April 2005 following the death of John Paul II.

He will be the first head of the Catholic Church to resign in almost 600 years and the Vatican said his departure would leave the post temporarily vacant.

A large tornado struck Hattiesburg, Mississippi around 5pm on Sunday, leaving 10 injured, according to local media.

There were numerous reports of severe damage to buildings, structures, and what appears to be a direct hit through the University of Southern Mississippi. (NewsPoint)

Belgium: Five dead and many stranded after plane crash

A plane crash has killed at least five people at Charleroi Airport in Belgium after crashing on the edge of a runway.

Flights were earlier delayed because of ice and thick fog and now the airport has had to close because of the accident stranding people waiting for flights.

People unaware of the situation are continuing to arrive at the airport.

First snow-related death from Blizzard Nemo confirmed

Blizzard Nemo has hit the North East Coast of The U.S. burying the roads in over thirty inches of snow in some places.

The first casualty of the severe weather conditions, a 74-year-old man, has died in Poughkeepsie, New York. He was hit by an 18-year-old driver, who lost control of his vehicle due to snow and hit the pedestrian who was walking on the side of the road.

Thousands of people came out on the streets of Tunis and Sfax in Tunisia on Friday 8th February, for the third day in a row, to mark the funeral of opposition leader Chokri Belaid, who was killed on Wednesday morning.

Cameron set to claim victory at EU budget talks

Europe's leaders are poised this morning to cut the European Union's budget for the first time in its 56-year history following a major victory for David Cameron.

A broad framework was reported to have been agreed, but hard bargaining is still expected at the Brussels summit. The discussion have been all the more precarious because any one of the 27 member states can veto a budget deal.

Cameron, who had demanded a freeze in real terms in the near-€1tn budget, was planning to claim victory after the European council president proposed a €34.4bn cut over the next seven years...

Tropical rainforests are often called the “lungs of the planet” because they generally draw in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. But the amount of carbon dioxide that rainforests absorb, or produce, varies hugely with year-to-year variations in the climate. In a paper published online this week (6th Feb 2013) by the journal Nature , a team of climate scientists from the University of Exeter, the Met Office-Hadley Centre and the NERC Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, has shown that these variations reveal how vulnerable the rainforest is to climate change.
