Grapefruit biomolecules may herald new treatment for heart disease

New research, published today in the 'Biochemical Journal' , has identified molecules occurring naturally in fruit that may play an important role in the future treatment of heart disease.

Molecules called flavanoids, which are found in citrus fruits, particularly grapefruit, have proven effective at reducing the inflammation that can lead to deadly cardiovascular disease. These molecules may hold the key to the development of a new generation of anti-inflammatory drugs which are cheaper, easier to produce and less toxic than current therapies.

Bishop of Thika to retire this month

The Provost of All Saints Cathedral, the Very Venerable Julius Njuguna Wanyoike is the Bishop Elect of Thika, following elections that were held at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, Thika, Kenya.

The Very Rev Julius will now be referred to as Bishop Elect until September when he will be consecrated and enthroned by the Archbishop of Kenya.

He becomes the second Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Thika.

The Diocese of Thika is linked with the Exeter Diocese and the Archdeacon of Exeter, the Venerable Christopher Futcher and his wife Anne will be attending this ceremony...

Prime Minister announces £500 million to relieve pressures on A&E

With over 1 million more people visiting A&E compared to three years ago, last year's harsh winter put exceptional pressure on urgent and emergency wards.

The new funding will go to A&E departments identified as being under the most pressure and be targeted at 'pinch points' in local services.

The aim is for patients to be treated promptly, with fewer delays in A&E, and for other patients to get the care, prescriptions or advice they need without going to A&E.

Bank of England provides forward guidance on interest rate

At its meeting on 1 August, the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted to provide 'forward guidance' regarding the future conduct of monetary policy.

The new Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney made an announcement on Wednesday (7 August) that the Bank intends to maintain a low interest rate from its current level of 0.5% for the next three years or at least until the unemployment rate has fallen to a threshold of 7%, subject to certain conditions.

British Osteopathic Association welcomes whiplash recommendations

The British Osteopathic Association (BOA) has welcomed publication of a report by the government's Transport Select Committee on whiplash, which has set out a number of recommendations for how whiplash injuries caused by road accidents should be handled in the future.

The committee was set up because of concerns that the UK was becoming the 'whiplash capital of the world' and the cost of claims for compensation pushing up insurance premiums.

Update: A man with links ot Exeter, who had gone missing from Sawbridgeworth, has been found safe.

Sixty-nine-year-old year old Michael Ashton was last seen at his home address on August 6. Michael was found in the local area this morning (August 8).

Police thanked members of the public and the media are thanked for their assistance.

Royal Mail today (7 August) welcomed the Government’s consultation on imposing tougher penalties for irresponsible dog owners.

Dog attacks are a significant hazard, faced by postmen and women on a daily basis. Since April 2011, there have been over 5,500 attacks on Royal Mail postmen and women, some leading to a permanent disabling injury. Attacks have resulted in the loss of 4,100 working days due to injuries. Over 2,400 postmen and women were attacked across the UK by dogs from April 2012 to April 2013. A shortage of male bone marrow donors is putting blood cancer patients at risk, says leading blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan.

Male donors are overwhelmingly chosen to donate by transplant centres as many doctors believe that they give patients the best possible outcomes, yet there are only 4,007 young male donors in the South West. This accounts for just 12.3% of all registered donors in the area.

Anthony Nolan uses its register to match potential bone marrow donors to blood cancer patients in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant.

Police call for witnesses to Plymouth stabbing

Police in Plymouth are investigating after a man in his 20s suffered stab wounds in an incident in Staddon Terrace Lane in the city.

The incident took place at around 1pm Monday 5 August. A number of police vehicles and ambulances attended the scene.

The victim, who has not yet officially been named, was taken to hospital by ambulance where it was confirmed that he had received three stab wounds to the shoulder, abdomen and thigh. His injuries are not thought to be life changing or life threatening.
